Wodehouse on Crime

The novel features Ogden Ford and his mother Nesta (both previously encountered in The Little Nugget (1913)). Nesta has remarried, to the hen-pecked, baseball-loving millionaire Mr. Peter Pett, and Ogden remains spoilt and obnoxious. The story takes its title from the charismatic character of Jimmy Crocker, Nesta's nephew and a reforming playboy. 'Jim' is called upon to assist in the kidnapping of Ogden, amongst much confusion involving imposters, crooks, detectives, butlers, aunts etc. - all in the name of romance of course. Piccadilly Jim has been adapted as a film three times, in 1919, 1936 and 2004, with Jimmy Crocker played by, respectively, Owen Moore, Robert Montgomery and Sam Rockwell. The 2004 version had a screenplay adapted by Julian Fellowes and was directed by John McKay.

When the dastardly Duke of Dunstable plots to steal Lord Emsworth's pig, Empress of Blandings, the wily Uncle Fred--aka the Earl of Ickenham--is called in to thwart him. To that end, the Earl arrives at Blandings Castle under false pretences, posing as pompous 'loony-doctor' Sir Roderick Glossop, accompanied by two other imposters, one of them the unfortunate Pongo; a bookie turned private detective; an angry sixteen-stone poet; a suspicious dancing secretary, and Lord Emsworth's pink-faced heir who will keep pointing his gun in the wrong direction.

Three Men and a Maid is a classic humorous story by P.G. Wodehouse.The maid of the title is red-haired, dog-loving Wilhelmina "Billie" Bennet, and the three men are Bream Mortimer, a long-time friend and admirer of Billie, Eustace Hignett, a lily-livered poet who is engaged to Billie at the opening of the tale, and Sam Marlowe, Eustace's dashing cousin, who falls for Billie at first sight.The four of them find themselves together on a White Star ocean liner called the Atlantic, sailing for England. Also on board is a capable young woman, Jane Hubbard, who is in love with Eustace. Wodehousian funny stuff ensues, with happy endings for all except Bream Mortimer.The White Star Line had a ship called the Atlantic, which operated from 1871 to 1873, when it struck a rock off Nova Scotia and sank with the loss of about 535 lives. As this disaster occurred 48 years before the publishing of the story, and 8 years before Wodehouse was born, it is unlikely that he knew about it.

Unwelcome guests are descending on Blandings Castle - particularly the overbearing Duke of Dunstable, who settles in the Garden Suite with no intention of leaving, and Lady Constance, Lord Emsworth's sister and a lady of firm disposition. Skulduggery is also afoot involving the sale of a modern nude painting (mistaken by Lord Emsworth for a pig). It's enough to take the noble earl on the short journey to the end of his wits. Luckily, Clarence's brother Galahad Threepwood, cheery survivor of the raffish Pelican Club, is on hand to set things right, restore sundered lovers, and solve all the mysteries.

Do Butlers Burgle Banks? (1968) features Mike Bond, the hitherto fortunate owner of Bond's Bank, who finds himself in a spot of trouble so serious that he wants someone to burgle the bank before the trustees inspect it. Fortunately for him, Horace Appleby, currently posing as his butler, is on hand to oblige. For Horace is, in fact, not a butler at all but the best sort of American gangster, prudently concealing himself in an English country house while hiding from his rivals. Looking for peace and safety, Horace is to discover before long that the hot-spots of New York are a whole lot more restful than the English countryside. This is the lightest of light comedies, a Wodehousian soufflé from his later years.
