Per Olov Enquist bygger denne kjærlighetsromanen rundt fire fantastiske skikkelser i forrige århundreskiftes Paris. I sentrum står Blanche Wittman og Marie Curie, dobbel nobelprisvinner, men utstøtt på grunn av en forbudt kjærlighetsaffære. Blanche Wittman var pasient hos J M Charcot som ble verdensberømt for sin hypnosebehandling av hysteripasienter. Blanche og Charcot hadde også et kjærlighetsforhold. Senere ble Blanche Marie Curies assistent, og hennes fortrolige, ikke minst når hun vikles inn i en skandaløs kjærlighetsaffære. "Livlegens besøk" og "Lewis reise" fins på norsk av samme forfatter. Den førstnevnte fikk den prestisjefylte svenske "August-prisen" i 1999.
