A deluxe, oversized book timed for the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's signing of the Yosemite Grant, an event that laid the groundwork for the National Parks system. Ansel Adams first visited Yosemite in 1916, at the age of fourteen, and returned every year throughout his life. It was in Yosemite that he fell in love with Western wilderness and became a photographer; he made more photographs at Yosemite than at any other place. Roughly 150 breathtaking images are exquisitely reproduced in this large-format clothbound book. There are notable portraits of El Captain (the famous rock face whose Dawn Wall was recently free-climbed for the first time), Half Dome, Cathedral Rocks, Royal Arches, and other distinctive rock formations that frame the valley; grand views in all seasons and all states of weather; intimate details of nature from the Valley floor; the waterfalls--Bridaveil, Yosemite, Vernal, Nevada; studies of trees, from the giants of the Mariposa Grove to the exquisite white blossoms of the dogwood. There are gathering and clearing storms, snow and ice, bright sunshine, and the subtle shades of dawn and dusk. The photographs have been selected and sequenced by Peter Galassi, former Chief Curator of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Nicholas Nixon

In August of 1974, the photographer Nicholas Nixon made a group portrait of his wife, Bebe, and her three sisters, Heather, Mimi and Laurie--the Brown sisters. He did not keep that image, but in 1975 he made another portrait of the four, who then ranged in age between 15 and 25. Working with an 8x10-inch view camera, whose large negatives capture a wealth of detail and a luscious continuity of tone, Nixon did the same in 1976, and this second successful photograph prompted him to suggest to the sisters that they assemble for another portrait every year. The women agreed, and have continued to agree every year since. In 1999, when the resulting series of photographs reached its twenty-fifth anniversary, The Museum of Modern Art published "The Brown Sisters," presenting all of the portraits in sequence. That edition is out of print. Now, as the family's "annual rite of passage," as Nixon has called it, hits year 33--a third of a century--the Museum is publishing a second edition, including eight new photographs that bring the series up to date. "We might wish," writes Peter Galassi, the Museum's Chief Curator of Photography, "that our family included a photographer of such discipline and skill but otherwise Nixon's pictures do what all family photographs do: they fix a presence and mark the passage of time, graciously declining to expound or explain."

The Brown Sisters

Nicholas Nixon is known for the ease and intimacy of his large format photography. He has photographed porch life in the rural South, the changing Boston cityscape, sick and dying people, the intimacy of couples, and an ongoing annual portrait of his wife Bebe and her three sisters, beginning in 1975. Included in the seminal 1975 exhibition " "New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape", Nixon is a major figure in American photography of the latter half of the twentieth century. In Close Far, Nixon presents a dichotomous group of photos made with his signature large-format view camera, in this case one with an 11x14 inch negative. The first half of the book contains self-portraits, comprising, in Nixon's words, "sketches of an old man". Filled with anxiety, longing and contentedness, these images chronicle the shapes, slopes and pores of Nixon's face. The second half of the book shows views of buildings in the densest part of Boston. Made from high within the buildings and with the same camera, these images without horizons do not gaze down upon but rather "through" the city. With the lens in the same orientation as his self-portrait photos, Nixon's results are remarkable for their richness of detail and complexity of form. Nicholas Nixon was born in Detroit in 1947 and has lived in the Boston area for over forty years. He has received numerous awards including three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and two Guggenheim Fellowships. In 2005, Nixon's ongoing portrait of the Brown sisters was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others. Nixon's books include The Brown Sisters (2005) and Live Love Look Last, published by Steidl in 2011.

Jeff Wall's large color transparencies set forth an imposing and seductive pictorial world. Ranging from the gritty realism of the city street to bizarre flights of fantasy, his photographs have won him wide recognition as one of the most adventurous and accomplished artists of the past three decades. This book accompanies a major retrospective jointly organized in 2007 by Peter Galassi, Chief Curator of Photography, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Neal Benezra, Director, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Between showings in New York and San Francisco, the show visits The Art Institute of Chicago. Born in 1946 in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he lives and works, Jeff Wall has charted an ambitious and unique path through the maze of contemporary art, drawing upon such diverse resources as Conceptual art, Neorealist cinema, philosophy, literature, critical theory, modernist photography, and the venerable tradition of European painting. The exhibition includes all of his major works to date, which are reproduced here along with several very recent pictures and a generous selection of artistic sources, cousins, and echoes. The latter are illustrations to Galassi's essay, which sketches the breadth and originality of Wall's artistic and intellectual universe and challenges conventional interpretations of his development and achievement. The book also includes an interview with the artist by James Rondeau, Frances & Thomas Dittmer Chairman, Department of Contemporary Art, The Art Institute of Chicago.

This book, based on the Frank collection at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, focuses on his American work. Its sequence of 131 plates integrates twenty-two photographs from "The Americans" with more than 100 images to chart the major themes and pictorial strategies of his work in the United States in the 1950s. The text reconsiders Frank's first photographic career and examines how he used the range of photography's 35mm vocabulary to reclaim the medium's artistic tradition from the hegemony of the magazines.

Brassaï (1899-1984) was a key member of a group of European and North American photographers who, over the course of the 20th century, managed to redefine the identity and enrich the potential of photography as an artistic medium. The main theme of his work was Paris, the subject matter for some of his most significant and renowned images. He captured vibrant images of the daily life of the city, especially the vitality of its night-time atmosphere, in a vivid expression of the powerful artistic dimension of his perspective. The evocative capacity of his images achieved unquestionable recognition that spread from artistic photography circles to the tourist industry and the commercial photography circuit.
