Modeling and prediction of oceanographic phenomena and climate is based on the integration of dynamic equations. The Equations of Oceanic Motions derives and systematically classifies the most common dynamic equations used in physical oceanography, from large-scale thermohaline circulations to those governing small scale motions and turbulence. After establishing the basic dynamical equations that describe all oceanic motions, Müller then derives approximate equations, emphasizing the assumptions made and physical processes eliminated. He distinguishes between geometric, thermodynamic and dynamic approximations and between the acoustic, gravity, vortical and temperature-salinity modes of motion. Basic concepts and formulae of equilibrium thermodynamics, vector and tensor calculus, curvilinear coordinate systems, and the kinematics of fluid motion and wave propagation are covered in appendices. Providing the basic theoretical background for graduate students and researchers of physical oceanography and climate science, this book will serve as both a comprehensive text and an essential reference.

Die männliche Herrschaft ist so tief in unserem Unterbewusstsein verankert, dass wir diese in der Regel im Ablauf des alltäglichen Lebens, aber auch in seinen Ausnahmen, nicht mehr wahrnehmen können. So kommt es, dass wir die Herrschaft nicht in Frage stellen, denn sie ist in unserem Leben derart allgegenwärtig, dass nicht ausreicht nur über das Problem nachzudenken, um jene ins Wanken zu bringen. Jeder Mensch, sogar die Forscher, sind in diesem Denken so verstrickt, dass sie über ihren eigenem Tellerrand nur sehr schwer hinaussehen können. Um diesem Problem auf den Grund zu gehen, hat sich Bourdieu entschieden, die Kabylen und deren Verhalten zu untersuchen. Unserer heutigen westlichen Gesellschaft sind Sie auf den ersten Blick sehr unähnlich, da sich bei Ihnen eine direktere, archaischere Form der männlichen Herrschaft zeigt. Doch gerade durch die Kontrastierung dieser Gesellschaft, die dem Betrachter erst so fremd erscheint, fällt es leichter den ungetrübten Blick für die eigene Gesellschaft zu schärfen, und doch die Eine oder Andere ungeahnte Parallele zu entdecken. So Lässt sich erkennen, wie präsent diese Strukturen in unserem Denken immernoch sind. Im Laufe dieser Hausarbeit wird die männliche Herrschaft im Einzelnen erläutert, in welchen Bereichen sie sich bemerkbar macht und wie sie sich im Habitus eingeprägt hat, am Beispiel der Frau in der heutigen Gesellschaft. The study of the ocean is almost as old as the history of mankind itself. When the first seafarers set out in their primitive ships they had to understand, as best they could, tides and currents, eddies and vortices, for lack of understanding often led to loss of live. These primitive oceanographers were, of course, primarily statisticians. They collected what empirical data they could, and passed it down, ini tially by word of mouth, to their descendants. Data collection continued throughout the millenia, and although data bases became larger, more re liable, and better codified, it was not really until surprisingly recently that mankind began to try to understand the physics behind these data, and, shortly afterwards, to attempt to model it. The basic modelling tool of physical oceanography is, today, the partial differential equation. Somehow, we all 'know" that if only we could find the right set of equations, with the right initial and boundary conditions, then we could solve the mysteries of ocean dynamics once and for all.

Software systems play an increasingly important role in modern societies. Smart cards for personal identi?cation, e-banking, software-controlled me- cal tools, airbags in cars, and autopilots for aircraft control are only some examples that illustrate how everyday life depends on the good behavior of software. Consequently, techniques and methods for the development of hi- quality, dependable software systems are a central research topic in computer science. A fundamental approach to this area is to use formal speci?cation and veri?cation. Speci?cation languages allow one to describe the crucial p- perties of software systems in an abstract, mathematically precise, and implementation-independent way. By formal veri?cation, one can then prove that an implementation really has the desired, speci?ed properties. Although this formal methods approach has been a research topic for more than 30 years, its practical success is still restricted to domains in which devel- ment costs are of minor importance. Two aspects are crucial to widen the application area of formal methods: – Formal speci?cation techniques have to be smoothly integrated into the software and program development process. – The techniques have to be applicable to reusable software components. This way, the quality gain can be exploited for more than one system, thereby justifying the higher development costs. Starting from these considerations, Peter Muller ̈ has developed new te- niques for the formal speci?cation and veri?cation of object-oriented so- ware. The speci?cation techniques are declarative and implementati- independent. They can be used for object-oriented design and programming.

This volume presents an overview of Bayesian methods for inference in the wavelet domain. The papers in this volume are divided into six parts: The first two papers introduce basic concepts. Chapters in Part II explore different approaches to prior modeling, using independent priors. Papers in the Part III discuss decision theoretic aspects of such prior models. In Part IV, some aspects of prior modeling using priors that account for dependence are explored. Part V considers the use of 2-dimensional wavelet decomposition in spatial modeling. Chapters in Part VI discuss the use of empirical Bayes estimation in wavelet based models. Part VII concludes the volume with a discussion of case studies using wavelet based Bayesian approaches. The cooperation of all contributors in the timely preparation of their manuscripts is greatly recognized. We decided early on that it was impor tant to referee and critically evaluate the papers which were submitted for inclusion in this volume. For this substantial task, we relied on the service of numerous referees to whom we are most indebted.
