In 1977, Max Neuhaus turned a triangle of pedestrian space between 45th and 46th Streets in Times Square into an island of harmonic sound. The rich textures of that sound continue today, emanating from beneath the sidewalk grating, to anonymously reach an individual's ears as if one has stumbled upon a secret. Known as Times Square, the celebrated installation was restored in 2002 with support from Dia Art Foundation, which further commissioned a site-specific piece, Time Piece Beacon, from Neuhaus in 2006 for its museum in Beacon, New York. This stunning book--the only volume in print dedicated solely to the work of Neuhaus--takes these two projects as a point of departure from which to consider the singular impact this artist has had in establishing sound as a medium in contemporary art. Times Square, Time Piece Beacon

Narrations features a cross-generational sampling of works by artists from Austria and its neighboring countries. The publication, in association with an exhibition at Kuntzhaus Graz, weaves together the narratives of artists younger than 35 and older than 65.

Karl Neubacher war hauptsächlich Grafikdesigner. Seine Plakate, die künstlerische Konzepte als Basis hatten, sind legendär. Durch das Miteinander von Gebrauchskunst und Formen der Konzept- und Medienkunst erzeugte er ein kreatives Spannungsfeld; Foto und Film waren dabei die Hauptausdrucksmittel. Neubachers Kunst ist deshalb im Kontext der Medienkunst zu rezipieren: ihre Aktualität wird so anschaulich. Zentral für Neubachers Arbeiten war weiterhin die Beschäftigung mit dem eigenen Körper, den er in Performances direkt einsetzte, in seiner mediatisierten Form aber auch als Bild begriff. Das Buch erscheint als Katalog zu der großen Personale im Kunsthaus Graz und ist gleichzeitig die erste umfassende Monographie über den österreichischen Universalkünstler Karl Neubacher.

The large-format video installations of Californian artist Diana Thater analyses the complexity of nature and its relationship with mankind. Her new work, Gorillagorillagorilla is a study of human and animal behaviour and the artist's further investigation of the medium of video as an image production tool. The pictorial section comprises both installation shots from the Kunsthaus Graz and a photographic essay by Diana Thater with pictorial material generated during the filming of Gorillagorillagorilla in Cameroon. Painter Christopher Wool has written, "Some of the best stand-up performance I ever saw was Martin [Kippenberger] telling jokes in the back of some bar or restaurant." Which is not to dismiss the legendary German artist, who was at the forefront of the much-storied Cologne art scene of the early 1990s--Kippenberger, who died in 1997, used humor like a laser, to illuminate power structures and taboos. One of the most important artists of the twentieth century, he not only worked in a variety of media--painting, sculpture, books and multiples--but, taking a cue from Joseph Beuys, actively tried to conceive new possibilities on which to model an art practice. At its heart is a feeling of direct involvement with people rather than musical values. These can function as sex objects or the embodiment of new lifestyles. For art, the system of pop music is as much a disturbing mirror as a rival event. Rock – Paper – Scissors brings together artists whose works and techniques have long been defined by a close relationship with popular music. In this catalogue, Dirck Linck, Nora Sdun, Christian HÖller and curator Diedrich Diederichsen ponder about pop music and art and their wild but reciprocal relationship during the last turbulent fifty years between the first TV pop stars and the YouTube reality of today.
