Making Things Public

Documenting and describing the emerging “performative democracy,” the first new art form of the twenty-first century. Today political protest often takes the form of spontaneous, noninstitutional, mass action. Mass protests during the Arab Spring showed that established systems of power—in that case, the reciprocal support among Arab dictators and Western democracies—can be interrupted, at least for a short moment in history. These new activist movements often use online media to spread their message. Mass demonstrations from Tahrir Square in Cairo to Taksim Square in Istanbul show the power of networked communication to fuel “performative democracy”—at the center of which stands the global citizen. Art is emerging as a public space in which the individual can claim the promises of constitutional and state democracy. Activism may be the first new art form of the twenty-first century. global aCtIVISm (the capitalized letters form the Latin word civis, emphasizing the power of citizens) describes and documents politically inspired art—global art practices that draw attention to grievances and demand the transformation of existing conditions through actions, demonstrations, and performances in public space. Essays by leading thinkers—including Noam Chomsky, Antonio Negri, Peter Sloterdijk, and Slavoj Žižek—consider the emerging role of the citizen in the new performative democracy. The essays are followed by images of art objects, illustrations, documents, and other material (first shown in an exhibition at ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe) as well as case studies by artists and activists. Freestyle thinking--that is Vilém Flusser's intellectual modus operandi: challenging and offensive, paradoxical and audacious. His thought knows no disciplines or subjects nor does it pay tribute to other academic frameworks or rituals. Above all else his thought wants to intervene in ongoing cultural and artistic processes and influence them. In order to achieve this, no closed theoretical systems are necessary--only open, operative structures. The Flusseriana is a toolbox capable of being developed and expanded. It contains more than two hundred "thinkthings" (Denkdinge) of all kinds: particularities like "Indian Summer," "Atlas," "Submissiveness," "Animal," and "Mediterranean Sea"; condensed Flusserian thought concerning the big eternal questions such as "History," "Language," "Myth," and "Religion"; the central concepts of his media analysis including "Apparatus," "Abstraction," "Cybernetics," and "Telematics"; as well as Flusser's own neologisms, "Communicology," "Universe of Dots," and the old and the new "Imaginations." More than one hundred authors produced the entries under these entries in a dialogic practice entirely in the spirit of the philosophical writer from Prague.

Artists and writers portray the disorientation of a world facing climate change. This monumental volume, drawn from a 2020 exhibition at the ZKM Center for Art and Media, portrays the disorientation of life in world facing climate change. It traces this disorientation to the disconnection between two different definitions of the land on which modernizing humans live: the sovereign nation from which they derive their rights, and another one, hidden, from which they gain their wealth--the land they live on, and the land they live from. Charting the land they will inhabit, they find not a globe, not the iconic "blue marble," but a series of critical zones--patchy, heterogenous, discontinuous. With short pieces, longer essays, and more than 500 illustrations, the contributors explore the new landscape on which it may be possible for humans to land--what it means to be "on Earth," whether the critical zone, the Gaia, or the terrestrial. They consider geopolitical conflicts and tools redesigned for the new "geopolitics of life forms." The "thought exhibition" described in this book can opens a fictional space to explore the new climate regime; the rest of the story is unknown. It examines works by dozens of twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists, including Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Lygia Clark, Anish Kapoor, Olafur Eliasson, Ana Mendieta, Fujiko Nakaya, Tomás Saraceno, and Alicja Kwade. The large-scale book contains over 800 color images. Negative Space comes out of an epic exhibition at ZKM, and volume editor Peter Weibel (Chairman and CEO of ZKM) takes a curatorial approach to the topic. The last exhibition to deal comprehensively with the question “What is modern sculpture?” was at the Centre Georges Pompidou in 1986. Weibel and ZKM pick up where the Pompidou left off, examining sculptures not as figurative, solid, and self-contained monoliths but in terms of open and hollow spaces; reflection, light, shadow; innovative materials; data; and the moving image. Weibel puts advances in science, architecture, and mathematics in the context of avant-garde sensibilities to show how modern sculpture significantly deviates from the work of the past. Aesthetische Paranoia

Erstmals werden die bedeutenden deutschen Aktionskünstler der Nachkriegsmoderne Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), Bazon Brock (*1936) und Wolf Vostell (1932-1998), die in den 1960er-Jahren zusammen auftraten, in einer Publikation präsentiert. Neben inhaltlichen Parallelen ihrer Arbeiten, etwa der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Holocaust, zeigen sich Berührungspunkte im Vorgehen der befreundeten Künstler. Alle drei waren an der Erfindung der Lehre als Aufführungskunst beteiligt und rückten das Vermitteln, die Diskussion und die Demonstration ins Zentrum ihrer Arbeit. Die radikale Emanzipation des Individuums sowie die Reform der Gesellschaft bildeten ihr gemeinsames Ziel. Das Schaffen der Künstler wurde nicht nur wegweisend für die Entwicklung des erweiterten Werkbegriffs, sondern leistet einen fundamentalen Beitrag zur performativen Wende und für die partizipatorischen Konzepte in der Kunst des 21.
