A few years ago, independently from one another, American artists Mike Bouchet (born 1970) and Paul McCarthy (born 1945) both had made a work that transformed the Guggenheim Museum in New York into a toilet. This coincidence sparked an ongoing conversation about shared interests in the politics of art institutions and their architecture, leading up to a site-specific project for Portikus that took up these concerns in a multilayered exhibition structure involving not only the main exhibition space, but the office, the monumental attic space, the exterior of the building, the island that the institution is housed on as well as external locations within the city. The project has now culminated in an extensive publication, documenting the process and the final outcome of Powered A-Hole Spanish Donkey Sport Dick Drink Donkey Dong Dongs Sunscreen Model.

In a companion book to the challenging exhibition at Bergen Kunsthalle, viewersexperience the latest work of Norwegian artist Knut Asdam, one of Europe'scentral contemporary practitioners of film, video art and installation. Thispublication brings together a collection of new commissioned texts on the projectsin the exhibition: Asdam's new films, Abyss and Tripoli (both 2010), and a newinstallation work based on the artist's own archive of found photo material.Exploring once again themes of transformation and relocation, borders andboundaries, inside and outside, Asdam confronts issues like the migrationof people between land areas, or physical movement and the bodilyexperience of architecture in urban surroundings.

The Long Gaze the Short Gaze

Otobong Nkanga's first monograph, Luster and Lucre, charts an intensely productive period from 2013 to 2016, which includes exhibitions at the 8th Berlin Biennale; Portikus, Frankfurt am Main; KADIST, Paris; and M HKA, Antwerp. Its title encapsulates the complex concerns that underpin these shows: "luster," the illustrious shining of materials; and "lucre," profits and gains. With the mineral mica as her starting point, Nkanga's research took her to archives in Berlin, Strasbourg, and Windhoek, and led her along a colonial railroad in Namibia to the historic Tsumeb mine. This rich research became works that probe the ambivalence of that which shines: poems, intricate drawings, modular sculptures that form systems of display, and performances that are both gestural and dialogical. With a foreword by Städelschule director Philippe Pirotte, Luster and Lucre also contains the essays "The Refusal of Shine" by curator Natasha Ginwala and "Blacklight" by scholar Denise Ferreira da Silva, as well as "Intricate Connections," an interview between Otobong Nkanga, Clare Molloy, and Fabian Schöneich. The volume also contains three exhibition-pamphlet inserts.
