Il aborde le grand tournant du 19e siècle où l'Atlantide devient l'objet de romans, de délires nationalistes, pour finalement questionner les rêves sur l'Atlantide, de Jules Verne aux fouilles crétoises et de Troie.

Ce livre commence aux environs de 355 av. J.-C., lorsque Platon rédige le Timée et le Critias. Assurément Platon a puisé dans la culture de son temps, d'Homère à Hérodote et Thucydide, mais le mythe du continent perdu, inséparable d'une Athènes également imaginaire, est son œuvre propre. Reste que le mythe a connu d'incroyables développements, dans l'Antiquité d'abord, et a littéralement explosé à la Renaissance, singulièrement après la découverte de l'Amérique, rapidement identifiée par certains au continent imaginé par Platon. D'autres, peu nombreux, résistèrent, dont le plus remarquable est Montaigne. Les nationalistes s'emparèrent du sujet, de l'Espagne à la Suède et de l'Italie à l'Allemagne, singulièrement à l'époque hitlérienne. Les savants cherchèrent à expliquer par le continent perdu tantôt l'histoire de la planète, tantôt la préhistoire minoenne de la civilisation grecque. Les personnages de Jules Verne la visitèrent ou la reconstruisirent. Dans le " ghetto modèle " de Theresienstadt, un poète et un musicien identifièrent avec l'empereur de l'Atlantide le despote qui les incarcérait avant de les tuer. Il était temps que cette longue histoire fût écrite en français.

Dwells on the personalities and the ideas of Maurice Bardèche, Paul Rassinier, and Robert Faurisson; mentions numerous other, more contemporary, Holocaust deniers and trivializers, such as Henri Roques and Pierre Guillaume. In the last decade, denial and trivialization of the Holocaust has gradually become an accepted idea, deeply rooted in the national culture. Although the radical right adopted Holocaust denial as part of its ideology, this phenomenon is in no way limited to the right-wing: many revisionists belong now to the radical left, Catholic integrist, and some other camps. Most of the exponents of Holocaust denial in France are apolitical intellectuals, and the phenomenon is much more cultural than political, albeit no less dangerous. Pp. 1-15 contain a translation of the lecture "Who Are the Assassins of Memory?", delivered by Pierre Vidal-Naquet in Jerusalem in 1992.
