Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

The Narrator's anxiety at leaving his mother at night culminates in a spectacular success when his father suggests that his mother stay the night with him. The Narrator's anxiety leads to manipulation, much like the manipulation employed by all lovers in the book, who use the same methods of petty tyranny to manipulate their loved ones.

SWANNS WAY

First published in 1919, Within a Budding Grove was awarded the Prix Goncourt, bringing the author immediate fame. In this second volume of Remembrance of Things Past, the narrator turns from the childhood reminiscences of Swann's Way to memories of his adolescence. Having gradually become indifferent to Swann's daughter Gilberte, the narrator visits the seaside resort of Balbec with his grandmother and meets a new object of attention-Albertine, "a girl with brilliant, laughing eyes and plump, matt cheeks."

Within a Budding Grove

Un Amour de Swann � est un roman dans l'oeuvre. On peut le lire ind�pendamment des autres parties. Il s'agit en r�alit� d'un retour en arri�re dans la vie de Charles Swann. Sa rencontre chez les Verdurin avec celle qui sera sa femme, Odette, et surtout sa jalousie maladive sont les th�mes de cette partie. Comme le reste de l'oeuvre, la narration se fait � la premi�re personne, mais puisque les �v�nements d�crits se d�roulent avant la naissance du narrateur, celui-ci raconte forc�ment le r�cit � la troisi�me personne. Et bien qu'� deux reprises, le narrateur utilise � je � en se rappelant les faits de ses relations avec Odette et Swann, cette partie du roman tient tout de m�me une place � part dans la Recherche.

Time Regained

The Modern Library's fifth volume of In Search of Lost Time contains both The Captive 1923 and The Fugitive 1925. In The Captive, Proust's narrator describes living in his mother's Paris apartment with his lover, Albertine, and subsequently falling out of love with her. In The Fugitive, the narrator loses Albertine forever. Rich with irony, The Captive and The Fugitive inspire meditations on desire, sexual love, music, and the art of introspection.

In the sixth volume of the series fitting seems that Proust's past actions conclude with a fair resolution. The captive is now the fugitive. Like in previous volumes, envy and distrusts eventually reveals unsuspected and unwanted revelations that leads Proust to reconcile himself with his melancholy. But unfortunately happiness still running away for him, and the marriage of his once good friends face him against his own misery which he tries to cover with indifference.

The Sweet Cheat Gone (the Fugitive)

In this fourth volume, Proust's novel takes up for the first time the theme of homosexual love and examines how destructive sexual jealousy can be for those who suffer it.
