These two volumes collect forty-four selected papers from the scientific contributions presented at the Third European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics, held in Granada (Spain), April 19–22, 1998. Ninety-nine scientists from Bulgaria, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Ki- dom, Uruguay and Venezuela attended the workshop, discussing the state of the art, new trends, and future evolution of the methods and applications. The workshop took place at the ‘Los Alixares’ Hotel, where 45 lectures were given by prominent members of the scientific community; in addition, 49 posters were presented in two very animated sessions. The success of this workshop is due, without doubt, to the excellent tradition initiated at the previous workshops, organised by Prof. R. McWeeny in San Miniato, Pisa (Italy), 1996, and by Prof. S. Wilson in Oxford (United Kingdom), 1997. These workshops create occasions for meetings and disc- sions on the current state of the art, emerging methods and applications and new trends in this area of science. The three meetings were sponsored and partially supported by the European Union (EU) in the frame of the Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) chemistry actions.

Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics

Since this book was first published 20 years ago, there have been remarkable advances in molecular quantum mechanics. The traditional methods expounded in the first edition have been absorbed into thegrowing field of "computational chemistry": but the whole fabric of the subject has also changed under the impact of techniques originating in theoretical physics. Consequently, besides rewriting much of the original text, it has been necessary to add an almost equal amount of completely new material: this covers second quantization and diagrammatic perturbation theory,symmetric and unitary group methods, new forms of valence bond theory, dynamic properties and response, propagator and equation-of-motiontechniques and the theory of intermolecular forces. Problems (withhints on solutions) appear at the end of each chapter and form a valuable supplement to the text. Like the first edition, this is a "teaching book" which follows a deductive step-by-step path from basic principles up to the current frontiers of research. Although aimed primarily at graduate students and their teachers, it should be standard reference for all who come in contact with modern theories of the electronic structure and properties of molecules. The last twenty years have seen remarkable advances in molecular quantum mechanics. The traditional methods expounded in the first successful edition of this book have been implemented on a grand scale. In the Second Edition, Mcweeny has completly revised the text and has added a wealth of new material and example problems.

These two volumes collect thirty-eight selected papers from the scientific contributions presented at the Fourth European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics (QSCP-IV), held in Marly-le-Roi (France) in April 22-27, 1999, A total ofone hundred and fifteen scientists attended the workshop, 99 from Europe and 16 from the rest ofthe world. They discussed the state of the art, new trends, and future evolution of the methods and applications. The workshop was held in the old town of Marly-le-Roi, which lies to the West of Paris between the historic centres of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Versailles. Participants were housed at the National Youth Institute, where over sixty lectures were given by l- ding members ofthe scientific community; in addition, over sixty posters were presented in two very animated sessions. We are grateful to the oral speakers and to the poster p- senters for making the workshop such an stimulating experience. The social programme was also memorable - and notjust for the closing banquet, which was held at the French Senate House. We are sure that participants will long remember their visit to the 'Musée des Antiquités Nationales': created by Napoleon III at the birthplace ofLouis XIV, this museum boasts one ofthe world finest collections ofarcheological artifacts. New Trends in Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics

These two volumes together comprise forty papers coming from the most outstanding contributions to the third European Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics Workshop held in Granada, Spain (1997). These books cover a very broad spectrum of scientific research work from quantum-mechanical many-body methods to important applications and computational developments, and from atoms and molecules to condensed matter. The first volume is subtitled Basic Problems and Model Systems, and includes the following topics: density matrices and density functionals, electron correlation effects, relativistic formulations, valence theory, and nuclear motions. The second volume is subtitled Advanced Problems and Complex Systems and covers the following topics: response theory, condensed matter, reactive collisions and chemical reactions, and computational chemistry and physics.
