Shonibare employs a wide range of media????????????????????????sculpture, painting, photography, video, and installation pieces????????????????????????to explore matters of race, class, cultural identity, and history. The artist is best-known for his use of a Dutch-wax fabric, which, though labeled as "African," actually originated in Dutch Indonesia and was introduced to Africa by British manufacturers via Dutch colonizers in the nineteenth century. Incorporating the fabric into Victorian dresses, covering sculptures of alien figures with it or stretching it onto canvases, Shonibare uses the fabric as a metaphor to address issues of origin and authenticity. Published as a companion to Shonibare's first retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York, this survey explores all aspects of Shonibare's work, offering a fully comprehensive portrait of his projects. Whether he is lampooning Victorian propriety or commenting on the latent ambiguities of the term "alien," Shonibare makes art that challenges straightforward interpretations. Essays by Rachel Kent and Robert Hobbs, together with a generous selection of color illustrations explore this talented young artist's work.

Cornelia Parker is well known for her transformation of everyday objects into unexpected, haunting scenarios - things are exploded, shot, turned back to front and rearranged in often surprising ways. Working with sculpture and installation, as well as drawing, photography and film, Parker positions her subjects at the very moment of their transformation, suspended in time and completely still. This catalogue features over forty artworks from across the artist's career, including large-scale installations, embroideries, works on paper, video works, and a selection of small-scale sculptures and objects. Highlights include 6 major installation works, including Thirty Pieces of Silver (1988-1989), Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View (1991), Magna Carta (An Embroidery) (2015) and War Room (2015). Alongside these major pieces will be a selection of works the artist created during her appointment as the 2017 Election Artist for the UK General Election, as well as her Avoided Object series of smaller-scale works, in which the artist has transformed everyday objects through processes of burning, squashing and flattening.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia is pleased to present the first major survey exhibition in the Southern hemisphere by internationally renowned artist and Turner Prize recipient, Grayson Perry, as part of the Sydney International Art Series. It introduces the full spectrum of his practice from the early 1980s to the present, including new work. Grayson Perry is one of the best known British artists of his generation, acclaimed for his ceramics, sculptures, drawings, prints and tapestries. With a keen eye for detail and a love of the popular and vernacular, Perry infuses his artworks with a sly humour and reflection on society past and present. The artist's highly decorated pots in particular reveal a panoply of imagery ranging from the highly personal to the political, their subjects including his own family, the art world, Biblical stories, the royal family, and images of warfare and sexual fantasy. Perry's transvestism and feminine alter ego 'Claire' emerges through his practice as a recurring visual motif. A contemporary of the YBA (Young British Artists) generation, he has forged a distinctive career that sits apart from the cooler theoretical approach of some of his peers, favouring a more flamboyant, accessible aesthetic that blurs the division of high art and popular culture.

Tatsuo Miyajima is one of Japan's leading contemporary artists, known for his immersive and technologically-driven sculptures and installations. This exhibition will be his first major survey exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing key works from the beginnings of his career to the present. Central to his practice are numerical counters that count from 1 to 9 repeatedly using light-emitting diodes (LEDs), then go dark momentarily. For Miyajima, the cyclical repetition of numbers, along with the shift from light to dark, reflect the importance of time. He draws inspiration from Buddhist philosophy, with its exploration of mortality and human cycles of death and renewal.
