Da almeno un decennio l’Occidente è scosso da due fenomeni imponenti: il crescente assenteismo elettorale e la nascita di movimenti e partiti che, pur di segno diverso, sono unificati dal violento movente antipolitico e antidemocratico. Nel frattempo regimi evidentemente dispotici diventano attori primari nel contesto planetario: Russia, Cina, i paesi del petrolio. Questi poli disegnano una situazione potenzialmente critica, quale non si era mai vista dalla fine della Seconda Guerra mondiale, che è probabilmente una crisi storica: il modello democratico sta forse arrivando al suo termine? Come la democrazia fallisce smonta pezzo a pezzo il glorioso paradigma democratico, mostrando che esso funziona a patto di prendere le sue componenti non come principi veri o promesse reali ma come “finzioni”, cioè come obiettivi impossibili, che nondimeno riescono a guidare il comportamento. Questi principi sono oggi avviluppati in insanabili contraddizioni. Prendendo per vero l’ideale di uguaglianza ad esempio si è finiti in irreparabili eccessi ed errori, come l’erosione di qualunque idea di autorità; assumendo come vera l’idea che la democrazia è una fata generosa, si pretende dalla sfera pubblica una miriade di prestazioni a cui essa non può fare fronte. Nel frattempo, con il supporto della globalizzazione si sono formati nuovi poteri, non derivanti da elezioni di alcun tipo e indifferenti a confini e sovranità statali, che prosperano all’ombra della democrazia mentre ne svuotano il significato, privando di potere gli stati sovrani. Several current linguistic approaches converge in rejecting the wide-spread idea that language is an autonomous system, i.e. that it is structured independently from the outside world and the natural equipment of language users. Around the world, semiotically biased linguistics (functionalism, naturalism, etc.) takes this position, which differentiates it very clearly from generative linguistics. One of the basic assumptions of such approaches is that language structure includes some non-arbitrary aspects, from the phonological through the textual level, and a great amount of research has occurred in the last decade regarding the “iconic aspects” of language(s). This volume focuses on generally neglected dimensions of language and semiotic activity, featuring contributions by philosophers, linguists, semioticians, and psychologists. After tracing the tradition of iconicity in the history of linguistic thought, the central section is devoted to specific analyses emphasizing the role of non-arbitrary phenomena in language foundation and linguistic structure. Specifically discussed are numeration systems, the gestural systems of communication among deaf people, the genesis of writing in children, and inter-ethnic communication.

The universal and typological status of the notion of word class — closely related to part-of-speech systems, morphology, syntax and the lexicon-syntax interface — continues to be of major linguistic theoretical interest. The papers included in this volume offer a fresh look at the variety of current theoretical and descriptive approaches to word class issues, and present original analyses and new data from a number of languages. The primary focus is on methods (including computational ones) and criteria for identifying and representing major word classes and subclasses in specific languages, with considerable attention also directed towards the characterization of the nature and role of minor — or neglected — word classes, including trans-categorization processes. The range of topics and perspectives covered makes this volume of considerable interest to both theoretical linguists and typologists.
