Die Entstehung dieses Buches folgte einem Anliegen der Studenten von Rainer Crone. Zum einen gab es den Wunsch, den Diskurs der sich um die ersten, schriftlich vorliegenden Fassungen der "Kunstwissenschaft der Gegenwartskunst. Uberlegungen zu einer Methodologie" unter den Studenten entfacht hatte, uber die Grenzen des Instituts auszudehnen. Des weiteren bestand das dringende Bedurfnis nach einer anschaulichen Umsetzung der dort formulierten Vorstellungen. Da zwar bereits eine japanische, aber noch keine deutsch Ausgabe des Buchleins "Paul Klee. Legends of the Sign", Columbia Press New York, erschienen war und der zweite Autor Joseph Leo Koerner neben Rainer Crone seine freundliche Zustimmung zur Ubersetzung und Publikation gab, lag es auf der Hand, mit diesem Buch den ersten Band der Theoriereihe von Edition ICCARUS zu beginnen.
