In 1999, acclaimed German multimedia artist Rebecca Horn created "Concert for Buchenwald", a large-scale, two-part installation in Weimar, Germany commemorating the horrors of genocide and emigration. This darkly intense work evokes both the shoah and the mass murders in former Yugoslavia. The first part of the installation is set in an abandoned train depot. Its walls are lined with glass panes behind whose shiny surfaces you can make out layer upon layer of ashes. Running alongside one of the wells, railroad tracks are blocked up by densely entangled heaps of various stringed instruments, reminiscent of the piles of corpses that were discovered in Buchenwald. The second part is installed in Schloss Ettersburg, an 18th century palatial residence. Here, the humming sound of panicked bees is audible from hives suspended from the ceiling of an opulent ballroom suggesting memories of expulsion and escape. The book's essays explore various aspects and interpretations of Horn's installation; the artist's own notes trace the origins of the installation's prominent metaphors.

The Maribor Project was part of the European Capital of Culture events in Maribor, Slovenia, in 2012 and took place at Umetnostna Galerija Maribor (UGM) over one and a half months. The project focused on the exhibition of some of Rebecca Horns most acknowledged works, chosen by the artist and comprising installations, mechanized sculptures and drawings. Horn also selected works by key contemporary artistsMatthias Deumlich, Ali Kaaf, Antonio Paucar, Jakob Schaible and Markus Wüsteto participate in an international dialogue at UGM. The event was accompanied by poetry readings by Rod Mengham, Toma alamun, Joachim Sartorius and Yang Lian, a roundtable discussion with Horn and Ale teger, a concert by Hayden Chisholm, and a film presentation. For a moment, the intercultural and interdisciplinary approaches of both the exhibition and the Maribor Project managed to break down the divisions between disciplines and cultures. The artistic diversity, the specific political, social, and historical references to Slovenia, and the aesthetic relationships between the diverse works on display allowed visitors to explore the complex ways in which art deals with philosophical approaches to life and death, love and hatred, and the inner and outer worlds.
