De tienjarig Michèle en haar twaalfjarige vriendin Manuela afkomstig uit een volksbuurt van Parijs, vinden op een dag een baby, die te vondeling is gelegd in een portiek. Ze verstoppen het jongetje in een leegstaand huis in een onbewoonde straat waar ze de baby zo en zo kwaad als ze kunnen, verzorgen. Na een paar dagen wordt de vijftienjarig Caroline ook bij hun ontdekking betrokken en vooral zij als wees, gaat zich erg aan de baby hechten. Tot slot lekt hun geheim uit en dan blijkt dat de baby door een overspannen vrouw is gestolen en vervolgens achtergelaten. De baby gaat weer terug naar zijn echte moeder en Caroline mag daar in huis komen wonen als verzorgster van het kind.
