René ten Bos neemt afscheid als Denker des Vaderlands met een knetterend essay over het begrip ?uitsterven?. Het uitsterven van diersoorten gaat in een ongekend tempo en is een van de urgentste problemen van onze tijd. Toch is er weinig filosofische reflectie over. René ten Bos probeert deze omissie recht te zetten: hij laat zien dat extinctie een subtiel ecologisch begrip is dat, net als alle andere begrippen in de ecologie, geen heldere contouren heeft. Extinctie gaat niet zozeer om het verdwijnen van het laatste exemplaar van een bepaalde soort, maar beschrijft veeleer een proces van ?uitdoven?. Niet alleen het voortbestaan van planten en dieren staat op het spel, maar ook dat van onszelf. Denker des Vaderlands René ten Bos ontwikkelt op eigenzinnige wijze een nieuwe visie op de tegenstelling tussen volk en elite. 0In Plato's beroemde allegorie van de grot wordt het volk door de ontwikkelde mens aangespoord om de grot te verlaten en naar buiten te treden om zichzelf te verlichten. Ten Bos denkt echter dat het volk er helemaal geen behoefte aan heeft om de grot te verlaten, en stelt dat het klassieke ideaal van de 'paideia' (het ontwikkelen van de mensen die we nu 'het volk' noemen) altijd al hopeloos is geweest. Want de elite kan wel vinden dat het volk uit de grot moet komen om zijn geest te ontwikkelen, maar het is de vraag of het aanbod van de verlichte geest wel aantrekkelijk genoeg is. Is het niet te abstract of te intellectualistisch? Willen we begrijpen wat het volk is en wat het wil, dan hebben we volgens Ten Bos een radicale speleologie nodig. We moeten ons verdiepen in de grotbewoners, wat niet wil zeggen dat we moeten worden zoals zij. De analyse in 'Het volk in de grot' leidt naar een duiding van de kloof tussen wetenschap en maatschappij. Uiteindelijk gaat het Ten Bos om de vraag in hoeverre wetenschap bevrijdend kan zijn.

Why is it that people in organizations seem to be so vulnerable to management fashion and guruism? And why is it that both phenomena are loathed in traditional academic thinking about management and organization? In this book, René ten Bos argues for a more philosophical rather than scientific understanding of management fashion. In doing so he questions the positivist and utopian orthodoxies that have pervaded management thinking. Ten Bos contends that management fashion is a cultural phenomenon that deserves serious reflection not only because it is so immensely widespread but also because its seems to satisfy particular philosophical needs among its consumers. Building upon some rather unusual sources in postmodern theory, the author argues that management fashion might encourage the practitioner to engage in philosophical self-experimentation and to adopt alternative forms of understanding. However, it is also argued that management fashion often fails to keep up to this promise because it remains paradoxically incapable of laying off its rationalist cloak.René ten Bos is a philosopher and management consultant. He works for Schouten & Nelissen and took his PhD at the Catholic University of Brabant.
