The Aborigines of Sakhalin

Chicago (see Zhgaagong, which may mean ""Place of the Skunk""). Kemo Sabe (see Giimoozaabi, which may mean ""he looks out in secret""), and Giche-gumi (from Longfellow's poem, see gchigami) are all words that came originally from algonquian languages and can be found in this dictionary. These languages have also given English such words as ""moccasin"" and ""wigwam"". In addition, words such as ""fire water"" (for hard liquor or whiskey) are direct translations from Algonquian languages. This 9,000 word dictionary gives information on the Ojibwa language, which is still spoken by over 45,000.

Eastern Ojibwa-Chippewa-Ottawa Dictionary

This dictionary is written for three audiences: first, native speakers of Ojibwa, Chippewa, and Ottawa who would like to have a consistent way to write their language, especially those who are engaged in teaching their language to others; second, students of the Ojibwa, Chippewa, and Ottawa language who need a reference work they can turn to; and finally, the scholarly world in general, particularly Algonquianists and linguists.

Volume 1,The Aborigines of Sakhalin, contains translations into English of the Polish, Russian and Japanese material on, for example, the history, folklore, economic life, shamanism, sexual life, medical anthropology, and the bear festival which has been published between 1898 and 1936, mainly in local journals which are hardly accessible today. English, French and German articles appear in the original language.
