Mýtus definuje velmi široce jako společensky vlivný příběh, k němuž se v nejrůznějších teoretických uchopeních váží tři základní otázky: jaký je jeho původ, funkce a téma. Interpretační možnosti představovaných teorií autor testuje na mýtu o Adónidovi, jednom z řeckých mýtů o krásných mladících, kteří vzbuzují touhu bohyní a dospělých žen, avšak umírají, aniž by dosáhli plné emoční, sociální a sexuální dospělosti.
