In this book, W. V. Quine’s Immanuel Kant Lectures entitled Science and Sensibilia are published for the first time in English. These lectures represent an important stage in the development of Quine’s later thought, where he is more explicit about the importance of physicalist constraints in his account of the steps from sensory stimulation to scientific theory, and in further using them to assess the extent to which mental vocabulary is defensible. Taken as a unit, these lectures fill an important gap in our understanding of his philosophical development from his 1973 work The Roots of Reference to his later work. The volume further contains an introduction that outlines the content and philosophical significance of the lectures. In addition, several essays written by leading scholars of Quine’s philosophy provide further insight into the important issues raised in the lectures.

This Special Issue “Characterization of Nanomaterials” collects nine selected papers presented at the 6th Dresden Nanoanalysis Symposium, held at Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems in Dresden, Germany, on 31 August 2018. Following the specific motto of this annual symposium “Materials challenges—Micro- and nanoscale characterization”, it covered various topics of nanoscale materials characterization along the whole value and innovation chain, from fundamental research up to industrial applications. The scope of this Special Issue is to provide an overview of the current status, recent developments and research activities in the field of nanoscale materials characterization, with a particular emphasis on future scenarios. Primarily, analytical techniques for the characterization of thin films and nanostructures are discussed, including modeling and simulation. We anticipate that this Special Issue will be accessible to a wide audience, as it explores not only methodical aspects of nanoscale materials characterization, but also materials synthesis, fabrication of devices and applications.

Characterization of Nanomaterials

This book provides us with an accurate historical view of the Sinclair family alongside Scottish history It explores the journey of the Sinclairs from their Normandy routes to Scotland. Sinclair is one of the oldest surnames in Europe and its ancestry goes back to William the Conqueror. The book identifies the origin and formation of the Sinclair Clan, shows the crest and tartans and their Earldoms and Castles. From these it guides us to places of interest today. The Sinclairs were well respected and throughout the centuries, won or were awarded property and lands. They were greatly involved in the battles of the Wars of Independence and are first mentioned in the invasion of England with William the Conqueror. This book goes on to describe in detail, all the battles looking at the first Battle of Dunbar in 1296 effectively ending in an English victory to the first battle for Independence, the Battle of Roslin. It goes on encountering the Sinclairs in the likes of the Battles of Bannochburn and Culloden to the ill fated Invasion of England in 1648 with King Charles II. It then takes us on, ending the journey at the Union of Parliaments of Scotland and England in 1707.
