Post-Communist States in the World Community provides a selection of papers on various aspects of the foreign and security policies of the post-communist states of Europe presented originally at the Fifth World Congress of Central and East European Studies in Warsaw. The articles cover Russian foreign and security policy, Russian policy in Europe, the foreign policies of the countries of East-Central Europe and Russian policy in East Asia.

Central and East European Studies Series, 1 (International Studies Library, 32) Over the past two decades Russia's relations with Europe and the West, in general, have deteriorated, as Russia rebuilt its international political and economic foundations and its leaders decided to pursue a policy of reestablishing Russia as the major regional actor and as an important global power. The chapters that comprise the volume examine the factors that drive Russian foreign policy, including those that divide Europe from Russia. They then examine the specifics of Russian relations with the European Union and NATO and the impact of U.S.-Russian relations on the Russian-European relationship. They conclud with an examination of President Medvedev's proposal for a new Eurasian security architecture. The overall message of the analysis is that the longer-term prospects for Russian relations with the West are limited, because of the deep divisions between the two sides. Maria Raquel Freire, Ph.D., University of Kent at Canterbury, is assistant professor in the Department of International Relations at the University of Coimbra and researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the University of Coimbra. Her research focuses on foreign policy, Russia and the post-Soviet space and peace studies. She has published widely, including Key Players and Regional Dynamics in Eurasia (Palgrave, 2010)

This volume provides answers to the question of how the international community might cope with armed conflict after the Cold War. It identifies key actors--states and international organizations--that have the resources and (potentially) the will to address the problems of continuing violence and enduring conflicts. The book also evaluates the roles and strategies that might be adopted by these actors, unilaterally or cooperatively, to ease or end such armed struggles. The authors review the role of the United States, Russia, Japan, and China, all of which have the potential to play constructive roles in resolving conflicts. They also explore the contributions that the United Nations, the European Community, and other transnational organizations can make to building a more peaceful and secure world. Instead of appealing to grand theory as a guide for coping, the authors conclude, different mixes of actors, resources, roles, and strategies will have to be fashioned to meet the special needs of each conflict. Coping is viewed as an international imperative and not as the responsibility or prerogative of any one actor.
