American born and raised, Christopher Benninger is one of India's most highly decorated architects. His career spans four decades in prominent roles: as an institution builder, professor, United Nations and World Bank consultant advising many governments, pioneering expert in social planning and low cost housing for the less privileged in Jamnagar, Chennai, Hyderabad, and several other cities, and master architect, designing many modern institutions nurturing development in India. His award winning projects include the Mahindra United World College of India, Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, YMCA Camp Site at Nilshi, Suzlon One Earth, and his own studio residence "India House" in Pune. Graduating in architecture from Harvard University where he later taught, Benninger completed further studies in urban planning at MIT and settled in India in 1971, founding the School of Planning in Ahmedabad where he remains an active distinguished professor. His name appears alongside Geoffrey Bawa, Charles Correa, and Balkrishna Doshi as one of the few recipients of the Great Master Architect Award in India presented every three years.

The genesis of the modern art movement in Bangladesh traces back to the partition of India (1947) and the establishment of the Dhaka Art Institute in 1948 by Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin and several of his contemporaries. This pioneering group included, among others, Safiuddin Ahmed, Anwarul Haque and Quamrul Hassan. Over the years, these dedicated visionaries and the institution they established have produced talented artists, many of whom have earned recognition at home and abroad. This book explores Safiuddin Ahmeds extraordinary contribution to Bangladeshi art and society, in a series of drawings, paintings, woodcuts and etchings, with more than two hundred colour plates tracing a lifetime of artistic achievements, that is virtually unknown in the West. Ahmeds works portray swirling, vigorous forms and motifs, with spectacular symbols, such as eyes, fishing nets and boats; continuously evoking the anxiety and disquiet of the times. For over sixty years, he has led the way in developing painting and printmaking in Bangladesh. Sophistication, a deep love of music, and a strong inclination to literature, is what underpins Ahmeds approach to life while his struggle for purity has always been his hallmark.

Over an established career, Karen Knorrs work has developed a critical and playful dialogue with documentary photography through the use of different visual and textual strategies. Her aim is to explore everyday subjects such as family, lifestyle, culture and animal life to subsequently stage them in very unusual contexts. She uses colour to investigate issues of connoisseurship, heritage, and art through staged events in architectural interiors. The use of text and captioning appears as a device to slow down the consumption of images and to comment on received ideas about fine arts in museum culture. These strategies appear in her photographs with digital collages of animals and objects in a variety of architectural interiors. Karen Knorr began the India Song series in 2008, after a life-changing trip to India. These latest images, which draw inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals in literature and art, create scenarios that are at once otherworldly and surreal.
