"Advances in Human-Robot Interaction" provides a unique collection of recent research in human-robot interaction. It covers the basic important research areas ranging from multi-modal interfaces, interpretation, interaction, learning, or motion coordination to topics such as physical interaction, systems, and architectures. The book addresses key issues of human-robot interaction concerned with perception, modelling, control, planning and cognition, covering a wide spectrum of applications. This includes interaction and communication with robots in manufacturing environments and the collaboration and co-existence with assistive robots in domestic environments. In diesem Buch steht die Informationsverarbeitung im Vordergrund: Roboter in einer realen Umwelt sollen gestellte Aufgaben selbständig und korrekt ausführen sowie angemessen auf unvorhergesehene Ereignisse reagieren; dazu ist die Modellierung der realen Einsatzumgebung und eines intelligenten Systemverhaltens sowie kognitive und motorische Fähigkeiten erforderlich. Methoden der Künstlichen Intelligenz werden eingesetzt, um Signale - über Sensoren aus der physikalischen Umwelt gewonnen - zu verarbeiten bzw. zu interpretieren und somit Wirkzusammenhänge zwischen Aktion und Reaktion herzustellen. Das Buch stellt aus Sicht der Informationsverarbeitung Modelle, Steuerungs- und Sensorkonzepte sowie Programmierverfahren vor und weist auf Anwendungsmöglichkeiten und zukünftige Entwicklungen hin. Distributed autonomous robotic systems (DARS) are systems composed of multiple autonomous units such as modules, cells, processors, agents, and robots. Combination or cooperative operation of multiple autonomous units is expected to lead to desirable features such as flexibility, fault tolerance, and efficiency. The DARS is the leading established conference on distributed autonomous systems. All papers have the common goal to contribute solutions to the very demanding task of designing distributed systems to realize robust and intelligent robotic systems.

Human Centered Robotic Systems must be able to interact with humans such that the burden of adaptation lies with the machine and not with the human. This book collates a set of prominent papers presented during a two-day conference on "Human Centered Robotic Systems" held on November 19-20, 2009, in Bielefeld University, Germany. The aim of the conference was to bring together researchers from the areas of robotics, computer science, psychology, linguistics, and biology who are all focusing on a shared goal of cognitive interaction. The 33rd Annual German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (KI 2010) took place at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT, September 21–24, 2010, under the motto “Anthropomatic Systems.” In this volume you will ?nd the keynote paper and 49 papers of oral and poster presentations. The papers were selected from 73 submissions, resulting in an acceptance rate of 67%. As usual at the KI conferences, two entire days were allocated for targeted workshops—seventhis year—andone tutorial. The workshopand tutorialma- rials are not contained in this volume, but the conference website, www.ki2010.kit.edu,will provide information and references to their contents. Recent trends in AI research have been focusing on anthropomatic systems, which address synergies between humans and intelligent machines. This trend is emphasized through the topics of the overall conference program. They include learning systems, cognition, robotics, perception and action, knowledge rep- sentation and reasoning, and planning and decision making. Many topics deal with uncertainty in various scenarios and incompleteness of knowledge. Summarizing, KI 2010 provides a cross section of recent research in modern AI methods and anthropomatic system applications. We are very grateful that Jos ́ edel Mill ́ an, Hans-Hellmut Nagel, Carl Edward Rasmussen, and David Vernon accepted our invitation to give a talk.
