The 'Global South' has largely supplanted the 'Third World' in discussions of development studies, postcolonial studies, world literature and comparative literature respectively. The concept registers a new set of relationships between nations of the once colonized world as their connections to nations of the North diminish in significance. This book suggests that linguistic translation is one minute province of an immense process of creative activity that constitutes the world as an ongoing dynamism of unceasing transformation. Building upon the speculative quantum gravity theory, which provides a narrative of the push-pull dynamics of transformative translation from the very smallest scales of reality to the very greatest, this book argues that the so-called translative turn of the 1990s was correct in positing translation as a paradigmatic concept of transformation. More radically, the book stages a provocative provincialization of linguistic translation, so that literary translation in particular is shown to display a remarkable awareness of its own participation in a larger creative contact zone. As a result, the German language, literary translations in and out of German, and the German-language classroom, can be understood respectively as quantum contact zones. Russell West-Pavlov is Professor of Anglophone Literatures at the University of Tübingen and Research Associate at the University of Pretoria.

This volume gathers together research by ten scholars engaging with multicultural discourse in Australia and Germany. The term 'polyculturalism' rather than 'multiculturalism' is employed deliberately to re-open a space in which the workings of discourse on culturally diverse societies, both as archive or practice, and as intervention, can be considered in greater depth. The inter-cultural perspective and wide range of disciplinary affiliations exhibited by the essays in this volume contribute to this goal: whereas the majority of discourse analytical work addresses the diversity of speaking positions, as well as the arbitrariness of ascribed meanings, within a historical framework delimited by national boundaries and disciplinary boundaries, the texts collected here transgress this perspective in working comparatively between Australia and Germany.

Diaristic writing has often been relegated to the fringes of literary studies as a marginal cultural activity. This volume seeks to challenge that marginality by exploring some of the wide-ranging forms of literary practice encompassed by diaristic writing in Europe from the Renaissance to the present day. The volume deals with questions of the value and status of the diary, of the functioning of the diary in society and history, and of the reception and interpretation of the multifarious forms of first-person daily writing. The volume investigates diaries across national borders and linguistic boundaries, so as to make the hitherto marginal place of the private journal a site of fruitful interdisciplinary encounters. Australian, British, Catalonian, French, German and Italian critics examine diaries dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, within the context of the literature, history and literary history of Catalonia, England, France, Germany and Italy. A prime concern of the essays in this collection is to highlight the cultural, generic and historical diversity of the diary, while emphasising the points of convergence between different texts and differing critical approaches to the texts. The volume will be of interest to students and teachers of European and comparative literature.

Transcultural Graffitireads a range of texts - prose, poetry, drama - in several European languages as exemplars of diasporic writing. The book scrutinizes contemporary transcultural literary creation for the manner in which it gives hints about the teaching of literary studies in our postcolonial, globalizing era. Transcultural Graffitisuggest that cultural work, in particular transcultural work, assembles and collates material from various cultures in their moment of meeting. The teaching of such cultural collage in the classroom should equip students with the means to reflect upon and engage in cultural 'bricolage' themselves in the present day. The texts read - from Césaire's adaptation of Shakespeare's Tempest, via the diaspora fictions of Marica Bodrozic or David Dabydeen, to the post-9/11 poetry of New York poets - are understood as 'graffiti'-like inscriptions, the result of fleeting encounters in a swiftly changing public world. Such texts provide impulses for a performative 'risk' pedagogy capable of modelling the ways in which our constitutive individual and social narratives are constructed, deconstructed and reconstructed today.

2004 jährte sich zum hundertsten Mal der Ausbruch des Deutsch-Namibischen Krieges (1904–1908) im damaligen Deutsch-Südwestafrika, der im Genozid an den Herero- bzw. Nama-Völkern gipfelte. Der Versöhnungsprozess findet langsam und vor allem durch symbolische Gesten statt, während formelle Verhandlungen nur schleppend vorankommen. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Aufarbeitung des Völkermords an Herero und Nama in der jüngsten deutschsprachigen Belletristik. Sie betrachtet eine Reihe deutschsprachiger Romane von Timms 'Morenga' (1978) bis Jaumanns 'Der lange Schatten' (2015) nicht nur im Rahmen diskursgeschichtlicher bzw. ideologiekritischer Debatten, sondern analysiert sie außerdem mithilfe der Affekttheorie. Dieser Ansatz erlaubt es zu beschreiben, wie literarische Texte mannigfaltige Rituale und Symboliken mit affektiver Reichweite über zeitliche und kulturelle Grenzen hinweg in die Gegenwart tragen und so zum dringend notwendigen interkulturellen Dialog und zur längst überfälligen Versöhnung beitragen können.
