Gesellschaftliche, ökonomische und technologische Veränderungen erfordern die Entwicklung von Lernkompetenzen als Voraussetzung für ein lebenslanges selbstorganisiertes Lernen. Vor diesem Hintergrund geht die vorliegende Arbeit der Frage nach, wie Lernkompetenzen als pädagogisch-didaktische Zieldimen- on theoretisch und empirisch fundiert und im Hochschulkontext praktisch gef- dert werden können. Ausgehend von der im konzeptionellen Teil entwickelten und präzisierten Problemstellung wurde im metatheoretischen Teil die dieser - beit zugrunde liegende pragmatistisch-interaktionistische Position dargelegt und das Forschungsdesign entfaltet und begründet. Der theoretische Teil setzt sich ausführlich mit relevanten didaktischen Theorien auseinander und entwickelt - nen pädagogisch-didaktischen Forschungsrahmen als Ausgangs- und Bezu- punkt für die weitere Theoriebildung. Gegenstand des explorativen Teils bilden drei qualitative Fallstudien, die an der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg (Deutschland, 2005), der Universität Stanford (USA, 2006) und der Universität St. Gallen (Schweiz, 2007) durchgeführt wurden, um innovative Praxisbeispiele zu explorieren und die Theorieentwicklung zu fördern. Jede Fallstudie wurde über einen Zeitraum von mindestens zwei Semestern anhand von unterschied- chen Untersuchungsmethoden im Feld exploriert – u. a. wurden 42 leitfaden- stützte Interviews mit 53 Personen geführt. Da diese Forschungsarbeit auf die Entwicklung einer Theorie zielt, wurden solche Lehrende ausgewählt, die unter Einbezug neuer Technologien didaktisch innovative Seminare gestalten, die das selbstorganisierte Lernen der Studierenden unterstützen und infolgedessen exp- zit oder implizit Lernkompetenzen fördern.
