Just Love Me--with its title taken directly from a late 90s neon sign by Tracey Emin--reveals how complex and differentiated female identity constructions have become today. Classically assigned roles have broken down. Radical feminist positions of the 70s and 80s no longer make sense. But if much has changed since the late 60s, when feminist artists began to make their most prominent moves, many social and structural problems remain. The strategies and perspectives of women artists today--and, presumably, of women today--are here considered through a selection of works by an important group of contemporary (mostly) women artists: Matthew Barney, Rineke Dijkstra, Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum, Jonathan Horowitz, Sarah Jones, Mike Kelley, Karen Kilimnik, Sarah Lucas, Tracey Moffat, Cady Noland, Catherine Opie, Pipilotti Rist, Daniela Rossell, Cindy Sherman, Ann-Sofi Sidén, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gillian Wearing, Sue Williams and Andrea Zittel.

"Imagination Becomes Reality Part 1," an exhibition cycle at the Goetz Collection, aims to re-examine and redefine contemporary "painting" without limiting media. The first volume brings together Jorg Sasse's impressionistic photographs, Thomas Scheibitz's two and three-dimensional work, Franz Ackermann's geographic abstractions and Tal R's intimate, naive expressionism.

Fragmented and morbid, yet full of an inspiring, adolescent sensitivity, Douglas Kolk's drawings and collages feature seductive, abject figures who seem to be at odds with themselves and the world around them. Influenced by Pop art and contemporary media images, Kolk's delicate, confessional works have titles like A Boy Named Deth, A Girl Named Sic, and Hi Sunflower! and deal intensively with popular youth culture. Perhaps the artist's personal history lends some insight: born in Newark, NJ, in 1963, Kolk grew up in a senior citizens' home led by his father, a Baptist preacher. After studying graphic design, he worked as an assistant to Robert Longo, and then as the curator of a corporate art collection. In the mid-90s, increasing artistic success brought enough pressure to cause Kolk to stop working for a while. He recently resumed drawing, and has had solo shows at Team and David Zwirner galleries in New York.

Among the reproductions are celebrated classics, including ones from among the Goetz’s impressive collection of works by Young British Artists and key figures from the Italian Arte Povera movement.
