There are more opportunities than ever before for young people with disabilities to participate in sport and adapted physical education. For example, there are more than 3.7 million athletes worldwide aligned to the Special Olympics organisation, with national associations active in more than 200 countries worldwide. Despite this rapid growth, all too often coaches and teachers lack adequate knowledge of the particular challenges faced by people with intellectual disabilities. The principal aim of this book is to improve the understanding and professional skills of coaches, teachers, practitioners and researchers, to promote awareness of successful programmes addressing the needs of such young people, and to challenge the prevailing myths and stereotypes surrounding their abilities. This accessible report explores why and how person-centred planning has spread from learning disability services to influence the whole of adult social care. The recent emphasis on self-directed support in adult social care makes this a timely overview of the origins of person-centred planning. The study describes how person-centred planning began, discusses the evidence base and explains why many practitioners find it an effective way to support people with social care needs. The authors take a critical but constructive look at the claims for person-centred planning in the context of current policy and service developments. Everyone feels sad when somebody dies, and people with intellectual disabilities have the same feelings of grief as anyone else. This book tells the story of Mary, who is very upset when someone she loves dies. She is encouraged by a friend to go and see a counsellor. Her counselling sessions help her to feel less sad. Later on in the book, Mary's friend Frank also loses someone he is close to. He is given comfort and companionship by his friends, and learns to cope with life better as time passes.
