This exhibition catalogue introduces historic photographs of Indigenous peoples of Western Canada from a collection housed at the University of Alberta's Bruce Peel Special Collections. The publication focuses on the ancestors represented in the collection and how their images continue to generate stories and meanings in the present. The selected photographs contribute to a richer, deeper understanding of the past. There is strength, character, persistence, determination, humour, artwork, dance, celebration, and so much more in the photographs. Some serve as records of cherished landscapes that may have been altered. Others provide links to ancestors: revered leaders, soldiers, healers, thinkers, and orators. The curators hope that the process of identifying the people in these photographs, only begun here, will continue.

Mistress of everything examines how indigenous people across Britain's settler colonies engaged with Queen Victoria in their lives and predicaments, incorporated her into their political repertoires, and implicated her as they sought redress for the effects of imperial expansion during her long reign. It draws together empirically rich studies from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Southern Africa, to provide scope for comparative and transnational analysis. The book includes chapters on a Maori visit to Queen Victoria in 1863, meetings between African leaders and the Queen's son Prince Alfred in 1860, gift-giving in the Queen's name on colonial frontiers in Canada and Australia, and Maori women's references to Queen Victoria in support of their own chiefly status and rights. The collection offers an innovative approach to interpreting and including indigenous perspectives within broader histories of British imperialism and settler colonialism.

Sarah Carter’s "Imperial Plots: Women, Land, and the Spadework of British Colonialism on the Canadian Prairies" examines the goals, aspirations, andchallenges met by women who sought land of their own. Supporters of British women homesteaders argued they would contribute to the “spade-work” of the Empire through their imperial plots, replacing foreign settlers and relieving Britain of its "surplus" women. Yet far into the twentieth century there was persistent opposition to the idea that women could or should farm: British women were to be exemplars of an idealized white femininity, not toiling in the fields. In Canada, heated debates about women farmers touched on issues of ethnicity, race, gender, class, and nation. Despite legal and cultural obstacles and discrimination, British women did acquire land as homesteaders, farmers, ranchers, and speculators on the Canadian prairies. They participated in the project of dispossessing Indigenous people. Their complicity was, however, ambiguous and restricted because they were excluded from the power and privileges of their male counterparts. Imperial Plots depicts the female farmers and ranchers of the prairies, from the Indigenous women agriculturalists of the Plains to the array of women who resolved to work on the land in the first decades of the twentieth century.

Recollecting is a rich collection of essays that illuminate the lives of late-eighteenth-century to mid-twentieth-century Aboriginal women, who have been overlooked in sweeping narratives of the history of the West Some essays focus on individual women --- a trader, a performer, a non-human woman. Other essays examine cohorts of women --- wives, midwives, seamstresses, nuns. Authors look beyond the documentary record and standard representations of women, drawing also on records generated by the women themselves, including their beadwork, other material culture, and oral histories. Exploring the constraints and boundaries these women encountered, the authors engage with difficult and important questions of gender, race, and identity. Collectively these essays demonstrate the complexity of "contact zone" interactions, and they enrich and challenge dominant narratives about histories of the Canadian Northwest

This collection stems from a recent conference at University of Calgary that included some of the most established names in the field of women's history in the US and Canada, as well as younger scholars, activists in the Aboriginal community and in farm women's organisations, volunteers in historical societies working to preserve women's voices, family and genealogical researchers, film-makers, a poet, a playwright and many others. Designed to generate writing and research about the West through women's eyes, the central goal of the conference was to spark dialogue across boundaries, whether geographic, cultural or disciplinary. The volume is divided into two parts: the first section discusses the role of women in history as community builders and cultural preservationists, and the second section is concerned with gender history in numerous disciplines such as history, education, nursing and communication studies. This collection highlights the extent to which Western and women's history remains a contested or unsettled terrain and argues that the greatest strength of historical analyses that take sex and gender into account is their ability to complicate and consequently transcend regional myths and frontier legacies that emerged out of imperial and masculine priorities and perspectives.

Agriculture on Plains Indian reserves is generally thought to have failed because the native peoples lacked either an interest in farming or an aptitude for it. Here, Carter reveals that reserve residents were anxious to farm and expended considerable effort on cultivation: government policies, more than anything else, acted to undermine their success. The late 1800s was a critical era in the social history of the Canadian Prairies during which racial tensions between white settlers and the Native population grew and colonial authority was perceived to be increasingly threatened. As a result white settlers began to erect social and spatial barriers to segregate themselves from the indigenous population. In Capturing Women Sarah Carter examines popular representations of women that emerged at the time, arguing that stereotypical images of Native and European women were created and manipulated to establish boundaries between Native peoples and white settlers and to justify repressive measures against the Native population.
