Saša Stanišic est né en 1978 à Višegrad, en Yougoslavie. De ça, il en est sûr. C’est inscrit noir sur blanc sur son acte de naissance. Pourtant il n’y a pas vécu longtemps, puisqu’il a dû fuir pour l’Allemagne en 1991. Il atterrit alors avec sa famille à Heidelberg, où il devient « un réfugié » avec ce qu’il faut d’humiliations, de déracinement mais aussi d’amour. D’amour, puisque c’est grâce à la littérature allemande que Saša tombe amoureux des mots et qu’il deviendra écrivain. C’est dans cette langue allemande qui n’est pas la sienne, dans cette langue d’accueil qu’il choisit d’écrire. Mais alors quelles sont ses véritables origines ? Dans ce texte pétri d’humour et de tendresse, Saša s'attache à répondre à cette question, en inspectant ses souvenirs à l’aide de sa grand-mère bien aimée, Oma Kristina. Il vagabonde dans sa mémoire pour tenter de se créer ses propres origines, celles qui lui ont un jour permis de déclarer à la rubrique « métier » du formulaire de demande de titre de séjour : « écrivain ».
