Cet infatigable témoin porte un regard sur le monde dont le réalisme n'exclut pas la grandeur, pour lequel la détresse n'exclut pas la beauté. Sebastiâo Salgado a décidé d'anoblir l'homme et si, dans cette quête, il porte son objectif sur les plus démunis, c'est pour montrer qu'à travers des situations les plus extrêmes comme la famine ou les plus dures comme le travail forcené, l'homme reste grand. Depuis 1986, Sebastiâo Salgado s'est concentré sur le monde des travailleurs, construisant une véritable épopée dans laquelle hommes et femmes accomplissent, au prix d'énormes souffrances physiques, un effort surhumain. Pour La Main de l'homme, Sebastiâo Salgado s'est rendu au Brésil, dans des plantations de canne, où les hommes sont traités comme des esclaves sur des terres qui leur appartenaient autrefois. Et devant l'objectif de Sebastiâo Salgado, les sidérurgies d'acier ressemblent à des cathédrales de fer et les travailleurs à des dieux immenses. En montrant combien la tâche de ces hommes et de ces femmes est difficile, le photographe leur redonne leur dignité.
