Henry VI, Part 3 (often written as 3 Henry VI) is a history play by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in 1591, and set during the lifetime of King Henry VI of England. Whereas 1 Henry VI deals with the loss of England's French territories and the political machinations leading up to the Wars of the Roses, and 2 Henry VI focuses on the King's inability to quell the bickering of his nobles, and the inevitability of armed conflict, 3 Henry VI deals primarily with the horrors of that conflict, with the once ordered nation thrown into chaos and barbarism as families break down and moral codes are subverted in the pursuit of revenge and power.

Questa innovativa proposta editoriale di Tutte le opere di William Shakespeare si avvale di due importanti elementi: dell’ultima edizione critica pubblicata dall'Università di Oxford (frutto di uno straordinario lavoro di specialisti inglesi e americani che hanno esplorato, in lungo e in largo, i complessi testi teatrali e poetici) e di nuove traduzioni, introduzioni e note (attraverso cui, oltre a tener conto del più recente dibattito esegetico, è possibile seguire l’incessante mutare dei linguaggi, dei gusti, degli stili, delle convenzioni di recitazione). I quattro volumi previsti sono organizzati secondo il criterio dei generi (poesia, tragedia, commedia, dramma storico, dramma dialettico, dramma romanzesco) combinato con il criterio cronologico di composizione (ad eccezione dei drammi storici, ordinati secondo la successione dinastica). In questo primo volume trovano posto dieci opere shakespeariane (e la seconda versione di Re Lear) che possono essere definite inequivocabilmente “tragedie”, anche rispetto agli archetipi greci e latini. La forma tragica elisabettiana si differenzia da quella classica nell'essere, come suggeriva Walter Benjamin, non più “tragedia” ma “dramma luttuoso”: cioè nell'assumere a proprio oggetto non più il mito unico nel tempo, ma la storia che del tempo è ancella: una storia nuova, che mette al centro la disgregazione dell'uomo, la tendenza alla duplicità, all'ironia, al dubbio, alla teatralizzazione, alla commistione del tragico con il comico e con il grottesco.
