Jucătoarea de go

1937. Alors que la Mandchourie est occupée par l'armée japonaise, une lycéenne de seize ans semble ignorer tranquillement la guerre, les cruautés, les privations. Mélancolique, seule telle « un rouleau de soie cramoisie enfermé au fond d'un coffre en bois », l'adolescente joue au Go. D'où tient-elle cette maîtrise ? Place des Mille Vents, la lycéenne s'amuse à mentir. Ses mains déplacent les pions sans jamais se tromper, les joueurs s'assoient en face d'elle à une table gravée en damier et la défient. Le Go est une esquive. Est-elle amoureuse de Min ou de Jing ? Sait-elle qu'ils aident tous deux à la résistance contre les japonais ? Entre les bras duquel des deux perd-elle une virginité fiévreuse ? Elle ignore encore son adversaire de demain : un officier japonais, à peine plus âgé qu'elle, un samouraï de métal, sanglé dans le sacrifice nécessaire à la Patrie impérialiste qu'il défend. « Agir c'est mourir » pourrait-être la devise de ce puritain qui va chaque soir au bordel puisqu'il ne sait pas aimer autrement. Ils vont s'affronter le temps d'une partie quotidienne de Go, en silence, dans le bruit mat des pions déplacés. Ils s'aimeront - sans un geste - alors que la Chine périt sous les japonais qui tuent, pillent, torturent. Min a été fusillé et Jing avili jusqu'à devenir traître à sa cause, mendiant le pardon de la jeune chinoise. L'ambitieux roman de Shan Sa, loin d'être le chromo d'une Chine idéale, a l'impassibilité implacable d'une guerre feutrée. Sous le masque, la violence, la peur, le désir. Construit en une narration alternée, chacun prend la parole à son tour, le roman nous laisse pénétrer l'intimité des personnages. Ici la fureur de l'officier qui ne se reprend que trop tard. Ici la naïveté et le chagrin de la chinoise. Les phrases claquent telles la bannière d'un clan mandchou.
