Sono i primi anni del Novecento e gli echi della rivoluzione hanno raggiunto, insinuandosi tra campi e colline, la campagna fertile di Linares: un laborioso, coriaceo angolo di Messico dove sorge l'hacienda dei Morales. È in questa famiglia che vive la nana Reja, l'anziana nutrice che ha cresciuto generazioni di bambini e ora trascorre i giorni sulla sedia a dondolo.
