Database Systems for Advanced Applications

The annual international conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA) is now well established as a reference scientific event. The reader will find in this volume a collection of scientific papers that represent the state of the art of - search in the domain of data, information and knowledge management, intelligent systems, and their applications. The 20th edition of the series of DEXA conferences was held at the Johannes - pler University of Linz, from August 31 to September 4, 2009. Several collocated conferences and workshops covered specialized and comp- mentary topics to the main conference topic. Seven conferences–––the 11th Inter- tional Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK), the 10th International Conference on Electronic Commerce and Web Technologies (EC- Web), the 8th International Conference on Electronic Government (EGOV), the 6th International Conference on Trust, Privacy, and Security in Digital Business (Trust- Bus), the 4th International Conference on Industrial Applications of Holonic and Multi-Agent Systems (HoloMAS), the First International Conference on ePartici- tion (ePart), and the Second International Conference on Data Management in Grid and P2P Systems (GLOBE)–––and 14 workshops are collocated with DEXA. These events formed a unique international forum with a balanced depth and breadth of topics. Interacting with graphs using queries has emerged as an important research problem for real-world applications that center on large graph data. Given the syntactic complexity of graph query languages (e.g., SPARQL, Cypher), visual graph query interfaces make it easy for non-programmers to query such graph data repositories. In this book, we present recent developments in the emerging area of visual graph querying paradigm that bridges traditional graph querying with human computer interaction (HCI). Specifically, we focus on techniques that emphasize deep integration between the visual graph query interface and the underlying graph query engine. We discuss various strategies and guidance for constructing graph queries visually, interleaving processing of graph queries and visual actions, visual exploration of graph query results, and automated performance study of visual graph querying frameworks. In addition, this book highlights open problems and new research directions. In summary, in this book, we review and summarize the research thus far into the integration of HCI and graph querying to facilitate user-friendly interaction with graph-structured data, giving researchers a snapshot of the current state of the art in this topic, and future research directions.

Existence of huge amounts of data on the Web has developed an undeferring need to locate right information at right time, as well as to integrating information effectively to provide a comprehensive source of relevant information. There is a need to develop efficient tools for analyzing and managing Web data, and efficiently managing Web information from the database perspective. The book proposes a data model called WHOM (Warehouse Object Model) to represent HTML and XML documents in the warehouse. It defines a set of web algebraic operators for building new web tables by extracting relevant data from the Web, as well as generating new tables from existing ones. These algebraic operators are used for change detection.
