Das Werk zeigt die zeitgenössischen Kontexte, die Dynamiken und die Zwischenstufen des politischen und gesellschaftlichen Prozesses, der zu dem beispiellosen Massenverbrechen führte. Es lässt sich als wissenschaftliches Hilfsmittel nutzen oder kann als Schriftdenkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas gelesen werden: von Lehrern, Forschern, Studenten und von allen Interessierten, die sich mit dem Holocaust auseinandersetzen wollen. Die Edition umfasst authentische Zeugnisse der Verfolger und der Opfer. Sie sind wissenschaftlich kommentiert und werden zum weit überwiegenden Teil erstmals veröffentlicht. Band 1 dokumentiert die Judenverfolgung zwischen 1933 und 1937. Die chronologisch angeordneten Schriftzeugnisse lassen sichtbar werden, wie die Entrechtung und soziale Isolation der Juden in Deutschland vorangetrieben wurde, welche Rolle der Terror, das staatliche Kalkül und die Gleichgültigkeit sehr vieler Deutscher spielten. Nach kurzer Zeit war ein Zustand erreicht, wie ihn der Berliner Rabbiner Joachim Prinz 1935 beschrieb: 'Des Juden Los ist: nachbarlos zu sein. Wir würden das alles nicht so schmerzlich empfinden, hätten wir nicht das Gefühl, dass wir einmal Nachbarn besessen haben.'

Mitte Oktober 1941 begann die systematische Deportation der Juden aus dem Zentrum des deutschen Machtbereichs. Tausende wurden in Zügen aus Berlin, Wien, Prag, Paris, Brüssel und anderen Städten in das Ghetto Litzmannstadt, nach Minsk, Kaunas oder Riga, und später direkt in die Vernichtungslager gebracht und dort ermordet. Auch aus dem vermeintlichen Vorzeigeghetto Theresienstadt im Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren, dem eine wichtige Rolle bei der Verschleierung der Vernichtungspolitik zukam, gingen Deportationszüge nach Auschwitz. Die 330 Dokumente des Bandes schildern die Lage der Juden und den um sich greifenden Schrecken, als die ersten abgeholt wurden und nachdem Lebenszeichen von den deportierten Freunden und Verwandten ausblieben. Zeitungsartikel, Diplomatenberichte und Tagebücher skizzieren die Reaktionen auf den Beginn der Deportationen und die sich in der zweiten Jahreshälfte 1942 verdichtenden Nachrichten vom Massenmord. Geheime Sitzungsprotokolle ebenso wie öffentliche Reden führender NS-Politiker zeichnen die zentralen, in Berlin getroffenen Entscheidungen nach, die den Weg zur Ermordung der europäischen Juden markieren.

The authors, both journalists and historians, argue that this group of intellectuals, often combining academic, civil service and Party functions, made an indispensable contribution to the planning and execution of the Final Solution. More than that, in the economic and demographic rationale of these experts, the Final Solution was only one element in a far-reaching programme of self-sufficiency which privileged the German Aryan population.
