This volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish world literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, which not only addresses the coexistence of cultures, but also the functions of a literary and linguistic space of negotiation in this context. From the Middle Ages to present day, the compendium explores the main Jewish chapters within Spanish- and Portuguese-language world literature, whether from Europe, Latin America, or other parts of the world. No comprehensive survey of this area has been undertaken so far. Yet only a broad focus of this kind can show how diasporic Jewish literatures have been (and are ) – while closely tied to their own traditions – deeply intertwined with local and global literary developments; and how the aesthetic praxis they introduced played a decisive, formative role in the history of literature. With this epistemic claim, the volume aims at steering clear of isolationist approaches to Jewish literatures.

What role has Jewish intellectual culture played in the development of modern Romance literature? Susanne Zepp seeks to answer this question through an examination of five influential early modern texts written between 1499 and 1627: Fernando de Rojas's La Celestina, Leone Ebreo's Dialoghi d'amore, the anonymous tale Lazarillo de Tormes (the first picaresque novel), Montaigne's Essais, and the poetical renditions of the Bible by João Pinto Delgado. Forced to straddle two cultures and religions, these Iberian conversos (Jews who converted to Catholicism) prefigured the subjectivity which would come to characterize modernity. As "New Christians" in an intolerant world, these thinkers worked within the tensions of their historical context to question norms and dogmas. In the past, scholars have focused on the Jewish origins of such major figures in literature and philosophy. Through close readings of these texts, Zepp moves the debate away from the narrow question of the authors' origins to focus on the innovative ways these authors subverted and transcended traditional genres. She interprets the changes that took place in various literary genres and works of the period within the broader historical context of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, demonstrating the extent to which the development of early modern subjective consciousness and its expression in literary works can be explained in part as a universalization of originally Jewish experiences.

Die vorliegende Studie geht der Frage nach, ob das erz�hlerische �uvre von Jorge Luis Borges nicht wesentlich in skeptizistischer Tradition steht - und ob es nicht dieses Moment ist, welches den Texten in einer Postmoderne, die ohne Zweifel zum Gutteil eine zweite (wenn nicht dritte) Wiederkehr der Skepsis in der europ�ischen Geistesgeschichte darstellt, die durchschlagende Resonanz gesichert hat. Eine Lektuere aus einer solchen Perspektive erhellt auch ein bis heute ungel�stes Problem der Borges-Forschung: vielleicht gibt es doch einen gemeinsamen Nenner fuer die auf den ersten Blick unvermittelt nebeneinander stehenden zwei Str�nge von Borges' Schreiben, die �realistischen� und die �phantastischen� Geschichten. Der Grundri� der pyrrhonischen Skepsis von Sextus Empiricus dient als philosophische Grundlage und wird in einem ersten Teil systematisch dargestellt. Ausgehend von diesem Horizont wird im zweiten Teil der Arbeit das skeptische Profil der Erz�hlungen anhand von Einzelanalysen herausgearbeitet.

Jorge Luis Borges und die Skepsis

Dieser Band präsentiert die 14 Autorinnen, die bislang mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet wurden. Dass Produktion wie Rezeption von Kunst und Literatur keine geschlechtsneutralen Tätigkeiten sind, ist keine neue Einsicht der Gender Studies. Doch der Umstand, dass diesen 14 ausgezeichneten Frauen 100 männliche Nobelpreisträger gegenüberstehen, macht deutlich, dass die Eroberung der Autorposition durch Frauen weiterhin ein schwieriger und vielschichtiger Prozess ist. So fokussiert der Band nicht nur literarische Traditionen von Frauen, sondern auch Fragen nach weiblichem Schreiben und einer erweiterten Kanonbildung. Im Mittelpunkt der Beiträge stehen exemplarische Lektüren des Werks und das intellektuelle Profil der jeweiligen Autorin. In the wake of the spatial and affective turns in Literary Studies in general, and the study of Jewish literatures in particular, this volume shifts focus from the extensity of exile and return to the intensities of sense of place and belonging across a moving landscape of 20th and 20st century literatures, Jewish and other. It brings together contemporary writers and literary scholars who collectively map these intensities onto a bodily word world in transit and textures of habitable, readable space as passage. Works by Hélène Cixous, Cécile Wajsbrot, Alex Epstein, Almog Behar, and Svetlana Boym explore sites made up of layers of passages, taking configurations of sayability and readability as forms, poetic and political, of inhabiting the material world. The contributions by literary scholars explore the theoretical potential of a mapping of such sites in studies of modalities of belonging and unbelonging in modern and contemporary works of literature. The volume collects a collaborative investigation of the exigencies and potentialities of sense of place and belonging through literature, Jewish and other. Dieser Band widmet sich Literatur und Künsten, die im Paris der Jahre 1917–1962 entstanden sind. Ausgangspunkt ist die Überzeugung Vilém Flussers, dass Migrationserfahrung und kulturelle Innovation engzuführen sind. Frankreich wurde in der Zwischenkriegszeit das zweitwichtigste Einwanderungsland der Welt nach den Vereinigten Staaten. Autorinnen und Autoren gelangten aus dem östlichen Europa, nach dem Erstarken der Faschisten aus Italien, nach 1933 aus Deutschland, nach dem Spanischen Bürgerkrieg sowie nach der Konsolidierung des Estado Novo in Portugal in die französische Metropole. Auch Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus Lateinamerika waren in Paris präsent, und der Congrès international des écrivains pour la défense de la culture im Juni 1935 machte die Stadt zum Zentrum des geistigen Widerstands gegen den Faschismus. Aber auch nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg migrierten Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftsteller aus aller Welt nach Frankreich. Die Beiträge berücksichtigen neben nahezu allen Sprachen der Romania auch die arabisch-, hebräisch-, deutsch-, russisch- und polnischsprachigen Literaturen. The multilingualism and polyphony of Jewish literary writing across the globe demands a collaborative, comparative, and interdisciplinary investigation into questions regarding methods of researching and teaching literatures. Disseminating Jewish Literatures compiles case studies that represent a broad range of epistemological and textual approaches to the curricula and research programs of literature departments in Europe, Israel, and the United States. In doing so, it promotes the integration of Jewish literatures into national philologies and the implementation of comparative, transnational approaches to the reading, teaching, and researching of literatures. Instead of a dichotomizing approach, Disseminating Jewish Literatures endorses an exhaustive, comprehensive conceptualization of the Jewish literary corpus across languages. Included in this volume are essays on literatures in Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish, as well as essays reflecting the fields of Yiddish philology and Latin American studies. The volume is based on the papers presented at the Gentner Symposium funded by the Minerva Foundation, held at the Freie Universität Berlin in June 2018.
