Ecological Engineering and Ecosystem Restoration

During the past 10 to 15 years, numerous models have been developed to help solve the increasing problems of environmental management. Until now, however, there has been no single work to provide an overview of the models that are now available. This two-volume work aims to provide such an overview. It comprises 14 chapters written by experts in the field, among them the editor himself. The first 5 chapters provide a general introduction to the subject, describe the modelling procedure itself, examine the use of the computer in modelling, and present unit processes (biological and physical/chemical) which can be used as elements presented in the following chapters. The following 9 chapters deal in turn with a particular environmental issue. For each an overview is given of the models available, and to enable the reader to use at least one of the models in practice, details are given and a practical example presented. From the book, the readers will gain a good knowledge of the wide spectrum of models available today on any of the environmental issues discussed and should also be able to select one of these models and use it himself in practice. An extensive reference list is also provided.

Applications in Ecological Engineering

Ecosystems are still a puzzle for mankind. We would like to be able to know their reactions and control them, but repeatedly we have been surprised by their unexpected reactions to our somewhat hasty actions. We unfortunately have to admit that our present knowledge about ecosystems and their true nature is rather limited. Many excellent contributions to a more profound understanding of ecosystems have been launched during the last two decades, but if you do not know the field, it looks as if all the presented ecosystem theories are in complete discord with each other. However, ecosystems are extremely complex and only a pluralistic view will be able to reveal their basic properties. The different approaches therefore have much in common, when you go deeper into the core material, than the first superficial more glance will be able to tell and there is therefore a natural need for a unification of the various approaches to ecosystem theories. It has for many years been my desire to attempt to make a unification of the many excellent thoughts, ideas and observations about ecosystems, that scientists have contributed. These thoughts, ideas and hypotheses have not been made in vain.

Decades of research and discussion have shown that the human population growth and our increased consumption of natural resources cannot continue – there are limits to growth. This volume demonstrates how we might modify and revise our economic systems using nature as a model. The book describes how nature uses three growth forms: biomass, information, and networks, resulting in improved overall ecosystem functioning and co-development.
