Throughout the twentieth century, glaciologists and geophysicists from Denmark, Norway and Sweden made important scientific contributions across the Arctic and Antarctic. This research was of acute security and policy interest during the Cold War, as knowledge of the polar regions assumed military importance. But scientists also helped make the polar regions Nordic spaces in a cultural and political sense, with scientists from Norden punching far above their weight in terms of population, geographical size or economic activity. This volume presents an image of Norden that stretches far beyond its conventional limits, covering a vast area in the North Atlantic and the Arctic Sea, as well as parts of Antarctica. Rich in resources, scarce in population, but critically important in global and regional geopolitics, these spaces were contested by major powers such as Russia, the United States, Canada and, in the Antarctic, Argentina, Australia, South Africa and others. The empirical focus on Danish, Norwegian and Swedish influence in the polar regions during the twentieth century embraces a diverse array of themes, from the role of science in policy and diplomacy to the tensions between nationalism and internationalism, with clear relevance to the important role science plays in contemporary discussions about Nordic engagement with the polar regions.

Ice humanities is a pioneering collection of essays that tackles the existential crisis posed by the planet's diminishing ice reserves. By the end of this century, we will likely be facing a world where sea ice no longer reliably forms in large areas of the Arctic Ocean, where glaciers have not just retreated but disappeared, where ice sheets collapse, and where permafrost is far from permanent. The ramifications of such change are not simply geophysical and biochemical. They are societal and cultural, and they are about value and loss. Where does this change leave our inherited ideas, knowledge and experiences of ice, snow, frost and frozen ground? How will human, animal and plant communities superbly adapted to cold and high places cope with less ice, or even none at all? The ecological services provided by ice are breath-taking, providing mobility, water and food security for hundreds of millions of people around the world, often Indigenous and vulnerable communities. The stakes could not be higher. Case studies from cities on five continents demonstrate the advantages of thinking comparatively about urban environments. The global discourse around urban ecology tends to homogenize and universalize, relying on such terms as “smart cities,” “eco-cities,” and “resilience,” and proposing a “science of cities” based largely on information from the Global North. Grounding Urban Natures makes the case for the importance of place and time in understanding urban environments. Rather than imposing a unified framework on the ecology of cities, the contributors use a variety of approaches across a range of of locales and timespans to examine how urban natures are part of—and are shaped by—cities and urbanization. Grounding Urban Natures offers case studies from cities on five continents that demonstrate the advantages of thinking comparatively about urban environments. The contributors consider the diversity of urban natures, analyzing urban ecologies that range from the coastal delta of New Orleans to real estate practices of the urban poor in Lagos. They examine the effect of popular movements on the meanings of urban nature in cities including San Francisco, Delhi, and Berlin. Finally, they explore abstract urban planning models and their global mobility, examining real-world applications in such cities as Cape Town, Baltimore, and the Chinese “eco-city” Yixing. Hur är det samhälle beskaffat som ifrågasätter värdet av humanistisk kunskap? Har människan slutat lyssna till sin egen röst eller har humaniora upphört att skapa angelägen kunskap?↵↵Vid universiteten och i forskningspolitiken har debatten om humaniora länge varit låst i två lika omöjliga positioner. På den ena sidan av en allt djupare klyfta står bildningens och den akademiska frihetens försvarare. De hävdar, från höger lika mycket som från vänster, att humaniora är i kris. Det mesta var enligt denna uppfattning bättre förr, studenterna, forskningen, anslagen och humanioras sociala status.↵↵Den andra positionen anser tvärtom att humaniora saknar eget värde. Perspektivet är instrumentellt och ser all kunskap, och därmed också den humanistiska, som en kortsiktig tillväxtfaktor. När forskning och utbildning ska ges en prislapp i kronor och ören väger därför de humanistiska områdena lätt. Det är en position med stark vind i seglen från vår tids kunskapsideal.↵↵I boken hävdar Anders Ekström och Sverker Sörlin, mot bakgrund av sina gemensamma erfarenheter från ett mycket brett spektrum av humanistiska verksamheter, att båda dessa positioner bygger på en alldeles för begränsad syn på vad humanistisk kunskapsbildning är och kan vara i ett större samhällsperspektiv. Humanistisk kunskap spelar redan en betydligt större roll än vad som sägs och erkänns. Ändå förblir den oftast oartikulerad inom en rad näringar och sektorer i samhället, det gäller till exempel frågor om skola och migration, miljö och turism, sjukvård och jämställdhetsarbete.↵↵I en tid av djupgående omprövningar på ekonomins, miljöns och den globala politikens område uppstår dessutom ett större behov än någonsin av ett kunskapsbegrepp som är gränsöverskridande och integrativt, öppet och förutsättningslöst prövande. Spännande forskningsområden inom humaniora som går djupt in i miljö, medicin, ekonomi och digitala medier växer nu i betydande omfattning fram mellan snarare än inom hävdvunna discipliner och fakulteter. Det påverkar hela vår kunskapskultur och därmed framtidens humaniora.
