Pierre Jules Theophile Gautier (1811-1872) was a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, and literary critic. In the 1830 Revolution, he chose to stay with friends in the Doyenne district of Paris, living a rather pleasant bohemian life. He began writing poetry as early as 1826 but the majority of his life was spent as a contributor to various journals, mainly for La Presse, which also gave him the opportunity for foreign travel and meeting many influential contacts in high society and in the world of the arts, which inspired many of his writings including Voyage en Espagne (1843), Tresors d'Art de la Russie (1858), and Voyage en Russie (1867). He was a celebrated abandonnee of the Romantic Ballet, writing several scenarios, the most famous of which is Giselle. His prestige was confirmed by his role as director of Revue de Paris from 1851-1856. During this time, he became a journalist for Le Moniteur universel, then the editorship of influential review L'Artiste in 1856. His works include: Albertus (1830), La Comedie de la Mort (1838), Une Larme du Diable (1839), Constantinople (1853) and L'Art Moderne (1856).

Gautier takes us into the fascinating world of 19th-century Naples where, amidst folklore, beliefs, challenges and passions, the difficult love story of an English couple, often disturbed by intrusions, unfolds. "Jettatura" is an interesting novel that, through fictitious characters, analyses 19th-century Neapolitan society, including its uses, customs and beliefs.

Upon the southern slope of one of those barren hills that rise abruptly here and there in the desolate expanse of the Landes, in South-western France, stood, in the reign of Louis XIII, a gentleman's residence, such as abound in Gascony, and which the country people dignify by the name of chateau. Two tall towers, with extinguisher tops, mounted guard at the angles of the mansion, and gave it rather a feudal air. The deep grooves upon its facade betrayed the former existence of a draw-bridge, rendered unnecessary now by the filling up of the moat, while the towers were draped for more than half their height with a most luxuriant growth of ivy, whose deep, rich green contrasted happily with the ancient gray walls. A traveller, seeing from afar the steep pointed roof and lofty towers standing out against the sky, above the furze and heather that crowned the hill-top, would have pronounced it a rather imposing chateau-the residence probably of some provincial magnate; but as he drew near would have quickly found reason to change his opinion. The road which led to it from the highway was entirely overgrown with moss and weeds, save a narrow pathway in the centre, though two deep ruts, full of water, and inhabited by a numerous family of frogs, bore mute witness to the fact that carriages had once passed that way.

As 1 have said, this artist has a multiform nature; you believe you understand him, you assign to him a rank, a manner and style characteristic, as you suppose; suddenly he places before you a new work which quite disconcerts you, and renders your former estimate incomplete. Who would have expected after tin's Wertherto see three large water-colors of still life, representing the very same fox, wolf, and lynx whose skins hang in his drawing-room, and which he killed with his own hand? Neither Jadin, nor Barye, nor Delacroix could have done better. This talent alone would be enough to make its possessor famous in Paris, and this is but one of the least with which Zichy is endowed; there is a truthfulness of tone, a skill in the anatomical drawing, a free touch, a fortunate rendering, a comprehension of each animal's nature, of which one can have no idea. Theophile Gautier's masterpiece Mademoiselle de Maupin might be better known for its lengthy preface than the actual novel itself. It is there in which the author discusses art for art's sake, arguing that everything useful is ugly. The novel itself is a historical romance based on the life of French opera star Julie d'Aubigny, better known as Mademoiselle Maupin. The subject of gossip and many colorful stories during her time, Mademoiselle Maupin was known as a first-rate swordswoman who often disguised herself as a man. In Mademoiselle de Maupin we find a love triangle between Chevalier d'Albert, a young French Gentleman who struggles with finding a woman that meets his idealistic expectations, Rosette whom he engages in an affair with to ease his boredom, and the dashing young Theodore, who is actually Maupin disguised as a man. Mademoiselle de Maupin is an excellent example of the French historical romance which in its time was considered somewhat controversial for its sexually orientated themes; by today's standards however it would be considered quite tame.
