Theresia Enzensberger kann nicht schlafen. Also schreibt sie ein Buch über den Schlaf und folgt dabei den verschiedenen Stadien, die wir in der Nacht durchleben. So beginnt sie in der zähneknirschenden Leichtschlafphase mit einem Essay über die Moralisierung von Schlaf, Traum als politische Metapher und die Folgen allgemeinen Schlafmangels. Fast unmerklich wird ihr Text in der Tiefschlafphase privater, innerlicher, und eröffnet uns eine intensivere, persönlichere Sicht auf die Welt, die Kunst, die Literatur. Weimar, 1921. La giovane Luise arriva alla scuola del Bauhaus, determinata a farsi strada nel mondo dell’architettura. Qui, tra maestri del calibro di Gropius, Klee e Kandinsky, gli studenti sono immersi in un’atmosfera di sperimentalismo e fervore artistico. Insieme ai fondamenti del disegno progettuale, Luise impara a conoscere anche l’amore. Dapprima con l’enigmatico Jakob, che la introduce nella cerchia mistica di Itten: è il periodo dei digiuni, delle veglie e delle camminate nella natura. Poi con Hermann, un uomo più grande di lei che riesce a darle un rapporto più solido, ma che finirà per rivelare una duplice natura. Nel frattempo la scuola si è trasferita a Dessau, dove la vita studentesca è fatta di notti brave, ma anche di discussioni politiche innescate dalla deriva nazionalsocialista della Repubblica di Weimar. Luise, che per inseguire il proprio sogno si è sottratta al ruolo di donna di casa a cui la famiglia vorrebbe relegarla, si scontra presto con la contraddittorietà di un movimento d’avanguardia come il Bauhaus: anche qui l’architettura è appannaggio della sfera maschile.
