The American Spirit: United States History as Seen by Contemporaries, Volume I

The objective of the program was to develop the technology and demonstrate the use of linear discrete actuators combined with a rocket control system (RCS) to control the large angle slew and fine pointing/tracking of a simulated large flexible space structure. The linear actuators included proof-mass actuators, and a hub torquer to simulate a control moment gyro or reaction wheel actuator. The demonstration used the CSDL/AFAL ground test facility located at CSDL, Inc. The facility comprises the flexible test structure and actuators which are mounted on a low-friction, air-bearing table, and associated test instrumentation. The combined linear discrete and RCS actuators demonstrated significantly improved fine pointing/tracking a vibration suppression capability relative to the uses of the RCS alone. Alberobello, Italy Travel. Bari and Five other in One Guide. Puglia, Trulli, Matera, Polignano a Mare, Bari. The main attraction in Alberobello, Italy, is the trulli. There are two primary areas composed mostly of trulli: Rione Monti, a touristic district on a slope facing the modern town center; and Aia Piccola, a quieter residential district. Rione Monti attracts mostly tourists and is ultra-picturesque -both up-close and afar. For the best photo of the district, cross the main street, Largo Martellotta, and walk up the steps located behind the public parking lot. From the terrace to the right at the top of the steps is the perfect spot for viewing a sea of conical roofs. Among the narrow streets of Rione Monti, you will find many tchotchke shops selling colorful terracotta whistles (a favorite toy in Puglia, and very annoyingly loud!), ceramics, and everything under the sun shaped like a trullo. While walking the area is very enjoyable, the constant pleas from local vendors coercing you into their shop can be a little distracting. A few owners go so far to pitch signs luring you in with claims of having the 'oldest' trullo or a 'panoramic' view. If you can't resist, the cost (if any) is usually minimal to take a peak. A nice stop is in Enoteca Tholos (located on the main street), a wine store featuring Puglian wines and local products. The staff is very knowledgeable about their products and eager to offer free samples -enough to make up a small meal! While in Rione Monti, head up Via Monte Michele to Chiesa di Sant'Antonio, a 20th-century trullo church..

Much of the hoopla surrounding quality circles, teams, and high-performance work systems has been based on anecdotes and very thin evidence. It has not been established that those employee involvement strategies amount to anything more than another series of management fads or ruses designed to get more out of workers without giving them anything in return. This revelatory book, written by some of the skeptics, lays some of the suspicion to rest.Based on their visits to 44 plants and surveys of more than 4,000 employees, Eileen Appelbaum, Thomas Bailey, Peter Berg, and Arne L. Kalleberg concluded that companies are indeed more successful when managers share knowledge and power with workers and when workers assume increased responsibility and discretion.The study of steel, apparel, and medical electronics and imaging plants revealed much. In self-directed teams, workers were able to eliminate bottlenecks and coordinate the work process. In task forces created to improve quality, they communicated with individuals outside their own work groups and were able to solve problems. Expensive equipment in steel mills operated with fewer interruptions, turnaround and labor costs were cut in apparel factories, and costly inventories of components and medical equipment were reduced.And what did the employees think? The worker survey showed that jobs in participatory work systems often provide more challenging tasks and more opportunities for creativity. Employees in apparel had higher hourly earnings; those in steel had both higher hourly earnings and higher job satisfaction.
