Despite the growing interest in general European history, the European dimension is surprisingly absent from the writing of contemporary history. In most countries, the historiography on the 20th century continues to be dominated by national perspectives. Although there is cross-national work on specific topics such as occupation or resistance, transnational conceptions and narratives of contemporary European history have yet to be worked out. This volume focuses on the development of a shared conception of recent European history that will be required as an underpinning for further economic and political integration so as to make lasting cooperation on the old continent possible. It tries to overcome the traditional national framing that ironically persists just at a time when organized efforts to transform Europe from an object of debate to an actual subject have some chance of succeeding in making it into a polity in its own right.

Censorship and its counterpart - the 'underground' production and distribution of printed texts and images - have existed ever since a 'public sphere' came into being. This book approaches the phenomenon of underground publishing by covering various cases from the Tsarist Empire, the Soviet Union, Central Europe, South America, and China. From a global perspective, the well-known practice of samizdat - under Communist rule, a key form of dissident activity in which individuals reproduced censored publications by hand and passed the documents from reader to reader - may be understood as part of a long tradition of underground publishing that is still relevant today in places like Russia, Iran, or China. The Cold War was not only about the imperial ambitions of the super powers, their military strategies, and antagonistic ideologies. It was also about conflicting worldviews and their correlates in the daily life of the societies involved. The term "Cold War Culture" is often used in a broad sense to describe media influences, social practices, and symbolic representations as they shape, and are shaped by, international relations. Yet, it remains in question whether - or to what extent - the Cold War Culture model can be applied to European societies, both in the East and the West. While every European country had to adapt to the constraints imposed by the Cold War, individual development was affected by specific conditions as detailed in these chapters. This volume offers an important contribution to the international debate on this issue of the Cold War impact on everyday life by providing a better understanding of its history and legacy in Eastern and Western Europe.

Der Kalte Krieg wurde nicht nur von Staatsmannern und Militarstrategen in den Spitzenetagen der politischen Macht gefuhrt. In Ost und West machte er sich vielmehr in allen Bereichen des gesellschaftlichen Lebens bemerkbar. Der offentlichen Kommunikation kam dabei eine zentrale Funktion zu: Filmemacher und Journalisten, Parteipolitiker und Kirchenvertreter, Wochenschauen und Fernsehstationen kommentierten und interpretierten, legitimierten und kritisierten die lebensbedrohliche Teilung der Welt. Durch den alltaglichen Medienkonsum war der Kalte Krieg im Leben des breiten Publikums prasent. Der ideologische Gegensatz von liberalen Demokratien und kommunistischen Diktaturen schlug sich in gegensatzlichen Vorstellungen von den Grundlagen des menschlichen Zusammenlebens nieder, die in Massenmedien propagiert und diskutiert wurden. Die Beitrage der Autorinnen und Autoren uber Spielfilme, Zeitungs- und Rundfunkjournalismus tragen zu einer neuen, kultur- und mediengeschichtliche Aspekte integrierenden Sichtweise des Kalten Krieges bei.
