The report of the first United States expedition to the Southwest, here in the handsome first British edition. One of the most important American travel books, including accounts of Pike's explorations on the Mississippi, Red, and Arkansas rivers and his visit to the Spanish settlements in New Mexico. He also visited northern Texas, and Streeter considers his account excellent. The maps present in this edition are the "Map of the Interior Part of Louisiana" and a reduced version of the map of the Mississippi. The Pike expedition stands with the narratives of Lewis and Clark, and Long, as the most important of the early books on western exploration.

Kandahar, a city of Pashtuns noted for their gaiety, so to speak, where Mullah Omar had made his final headquarters, has traditions of men in high-heeled sandals, with make-up of kohl and painted nails like sultry silent-movie stars. The Magnum photographer Thomas Dworzak, on war assignment for The New Yorker, discovered these photographs of the Taliban days after they had fled the city. They hung among portraits of Bruce Lee, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ahmed Shah Massoud, their faces retouched by the artful brushwork of the photographer. Thomas Dworzak, originally from Koetzting, Bavaria Forest, began freelancing in Eastern Europe and the Middle East in 1991. Three years later he was based in Tbilisi, Georgia, covering the Caucasus and Chechnya.

The Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806 across America from Pittsburg to the Pacific and back was the third recorded transcontinental journey. President Jefferson had negotiated the Louisiana Purchase of over two million square kilometres from the French in 1803, and the aim of the expedition was to investigate the territory involved. He commissioned a Corps of Discovery as a scientific and military expedition to survey the acquisition, appointing his aide Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) to lead it. It was hoped to discover that the Missouri and other rivers could be used for transcontinental communication and transport, and to assess the natural resources of the area. Some of the party returned east with specimens, reports and a map, while the remainder reached the Pacific in December 1805. Volume 3 covers the return journey, during which Lewis and Clark separated to survey more of the tributaries of the Missouri.
