The Helsinki School

The photographer and architect Gabriela Torres Ruiz (*1970 in Mexico City) shows how silence can be captured photographically and the associations it engenders. With a fine sense for the poetic interplay between light, color, and space, her Silence series juxtaposes landscape motifs and interior photographs in diptychs and triptychs. The depicted decay of the buildings alongside enchanted alpine and forest landscapes make reference to the cycle between architecture and nature, which ultimately reclaims its environment. Not only do the photographs reveal a formal affinity in terms of their texture and nuanced color as a result of Torres Ruiz's sensitive selection, but they also closely relate in content. The melancholy beauty of Iceland was the source of inspiration for the series. The photographer has since sought out further abandoned and forgotten places for the purpose of reflecting on the phenomenon of "silence."

Grey Crawford produced his photo series El Mirage from 1975-78; featuring his minimalist structures made of glass and steel, the pictures were taken in the southern Mojave Desert in the American West. These abstract works focus on the artist's interventions in nature and architecture, and are being published for the first time.Besides the black-and-white photos that Crawford is famous for, this volume also contains color photography, an introduction by Timothy Persons, and an essay by Lyle Rexer.

The fifth volume in the "Helsinki School" series, this publication looks back at the development of this group of photographers over the past 20 years. In a collection of essays, international curators, critics and museum directors describe their encounters with the Helsinki School, from the first exhibitions in the late 1990s to the work of the youngest generation. A discussion between Timothy Persons and Alistair Hicks concludes these contributions. The texts are accompanied by installation shots of exhibitions, archival material and recent work by the artists. Not only a history, the book also looks toward the future of the Helsinki School. This volume includes work by Elina Brotherus, Ilkka Halso, Tiina Itkonen, Sandra Kantanen, Timo Kelaranta, Ola Kolehmainen, Tanja Koljonen, Milja Laurila, Anni Leppälä, Janne Lehtinen, Niko Luoma, Susanna Majuri, Nelli Palomäki and Jorma Puranen.

Helsinki School photographer Ola Kolehmainen's work centers on the basic structures of contemporary architecture, and the series of strict geometric forms that characterize them--he photographs the grids of curtain glass facades as both Minimalist compositions and canvases for the altered landscapes that they reflect back to the world. In creating these nearly abstract images he describes himself as eliminating "visual noise," yet Kolehmainen remains welcoming to the elements that undermine the cleanest view--he lets tree branches wave into the frame, or puffy white clouds break chaotically over the sky-blue squares of a façade. Kolehmainen was born in 1964 and studied at the University of Arts and Design, Helsinki; Fraction Abstraction Recreation collects his unpublished works of the past two years.
