Un ton léger pour une histoire pas vraiment amusante, mais qui permet de relativiser et d’avancer Tout commence le jour où Danny, dix ans, envoie une brique à trois trous dans la fenêtre d’un vieux voisin, ce qui a pour effet d’écrabouiller sa loutre empaillée. Dommage pour le voisin, bien fait pour la loutre... À la suite de quoi, Danny fait plusieurs rencontres, qui vont le pousser à tout quitter, l’école, ses parents, sa petite sœur Angela, ses amis, hanté par le souvenir de Finn, son frère jumeau. L’auteur lance son jeune héros sur la route et dans une quête. La quête d’une solution à son problème. Danny croise des personnages très contrastés. Une vieille dame qui tente d’éduquer les pollueurs en les poursuivant avec ses écriteaux. Un enfant dont la vie est rendue impossible par une mère qui a la phobie des microbes. Et, enfin, un peintre, engagé dans le même processus que Danny. Danny parle. Mais, surtout, Danny se tait. Jusqu’à ce qu’enfin il soit prêt à raconter toute son histoire, cette histoire qui lui fait tant de mal. Ce n'est que dans les dernières pages que le lecteur découvrira ce qui est arrivé à Finn. Ranch life, cowboying, and metalworking in the American West are interwoven through the book, as they were in the real life of Ed Blanchard, who emerges from these pages as a humorous, down-home regional character readers will be glad to get to know.
