"Meist kam er später als alle anderen und ging früher", schreibt der Lyriker Raphael Urweider in seinen Erinnerungen an frühe Begegnungen mit "Luki", der damals begonnen hatte, Kurzgeschichten zu schreiben. "Er war einer der wenigen, der eine Armbanduhr trug und auch immer wieder darauf schaute." Seit diesen Anfängen Ende der 1990er Jahre ist ein mit existenziellen Fragen ringendes Werk entstanden – oft düster, manchmal komisch. "Das Schreiben ist ihm Instrument, die Welt zu greifen, ihre Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, Orientierung zu finden", so die Dramaturgin Judith Gerstenberg. The volume presents an introduction to the work of the writer Leo Perutz (1882–1957). Each of the ten chapters deals with one of Perutz’ novels, from Die dritte Kugel [The third bullet] through to Der Judas des Leonardo [Leonardo’s Judas]. In addition to the textual analyses, the volume contains a hitherto unpublished novella and a comprehensive bibliography. In its approach, the volume makes a case for a way of dealing with literary texts which combines structuralist and hermeneutical traditions. Each of the chapters proceeds from a reconstruction of the structure of a text to its interpretation.

This anthology presents the results of the Second International Colloquium of the Narratology Research Group (Hamburg University). It engages in the exploration of approaches that broaden Narratology's realm. The contributions illustrate the transcendence of traditional models common to Narratology. They also reflect on the relevance of such a 'going beyond' as seen in more general terms: What interrelation can be observed between re-definition of object domain and re-definition of method? The opening chapters examine the introduction of the concept in Wayne C. Booth’s “Rhetoric of Fiction” and the discussion of the concept in narratology and in the theory and practice of interpretation. The final chapter develops proposals for clarifying or replacing the concept.
