Tomas Espedals neues Buch beginnt an einem 6. April, dem Tag, an dem Petrarca seine Laura zum ersten Mal sah. Ausgehend von dieser unerfüllten Liebe, der Quelle für Petrarcas Liebesgedichte, geht Espedal der Frage nach, ob eine solch große, einzigartige Liebe, die alle Zeiten überdauert, heute noch möglich ist, ob sie überhaupt jemals möglich war. Gemeinsam mit seinem gebrechlichen Vater unternimmt er eine Kreuzfahrt durchs Mittelmeer und bemerkt erst dort, als der Vater aufzublühen scheint, dass er auch ihn bald verlieren wird. In der Liebe seines Vaters für seine verstorbene Mutter wie auch in seiner eigenen Liebe für Janne, die ihn bereits vor Jahren verlassen hat, erkennt Tomas etwas ähnlich Bedingungsloses und Andauerndes wie bei Petrarca. Am Ende waren sie dennoch alle allein. Nicht nur die Erfahrung einer so tiefen Liebe ist lebensverändernd, sondern auch deren Verlust. Wie ist es möglich, angesichts einer so umfassenden Erfahrung weiterzuleben wie bisher? Das Jahr ist Tomas Espedals bisher poetischstes Buch.
