The City of the Sun

A contemporary of Giordano Bruno and Galileo, Tommaso Campanella (1568–1639) was a controversial philosopher, theologian, astrologer, and poet who was persecuted during the Inquisition and spent much of his adult life imprisoned because of his heterodox views. He is best known today for two works: The City of the Sun, a dialogue inspired by Plato’s Republic, in which he prophesies a vision of a unified, peaceful world governed by a theocratic monarchy; and his well-meaning Defense of Galileo, which may have done Galileo more harm than good because of Campanella’s previous conviction for heresy. But Campanella’s philosophical poems are where his most forceful and undiluted ideas reside. His poetry is where his faith in observable and experimental sciences, his astrological and occult wisdom, his ideas about deism, his anti-Aristotelianism, and his calls for religious and secular reform most put him at odds with both civil and church authorities. For this volume, Sherry Roush has selected Campanella’s best and most idiosyncratic poems, which are masterpieces of sixteenth-century Italian lyrics, displaying a questing mind of great, if unorthodox, brilliance, and showing Campanella’s passionate belief in the intrinsic harmony between the sacred and secular.

The Protagonist describes his search for this land where the labor is divided equally among people who work for common good and not for money. City of the Sun, written in 1602, is Tommaso Campanella's contribution to the body of literature concerned with utopia, the philosophical search for the perfect society. Campanella's utopia was based on a form of communism in which all possessions, including women and children, were shared by men. The great city was ruled by a spiritual leader named Metaphysic, whom Power, Wisdom, and Love served, overseeing all aspects of the society. Wisdom ensures that the sciences are properly taught, while Love ensures that men and women breed the most perfect children. Those with an interest in philosophy and sociology will find this book an intriguing take on the structure of an ideal society. Italian philosopher and theologian TOMMASO CAMPANELLA (1568-1639) became a monk at the age of fifteen. He was imprisoned for twenty-seven years for conspiring against the Spanish crown, and it was during this time that he wrote his most important works, including Atheismus triumphatus (1605) and Metaphysica (1609).

“The City of the Sun” is a philosophical work by the Italian Dominican philosopher Tommaso Campanella. It is an important early utopian work. The book is presented as a dialogue between "a Grandmaster of the Knights Hospitaller and a Genoese Sea-Captain". Inspired by Plato's Republic and the description of Atlantis in Timaeus, it describes a theocratic society where goods, women and children are held in common. One of the most significant aspects of this community is the distribution of work. Once again Campanella engages in an explicit polemic with Aristotle, who had excluded artisans, peasants and those involved in manual labor from the category of full citizenship and from the highest levels of virtue.

Ciudad del Sol (en latín, Civitas Solis) fue una obra escrita por el fraile dominico italiano Tomás Campanella en 1602 durante su estancia en la cárcel de Nápoles por haber promovido un intento de insurrección en Calabria en 1599 contra la Corona española «prometiendo a los que le siguieran una república comunista fundada en la concordia y en el amor». Junto con la Utopía de Tomás Moro —que influyó en Campanella a través de la utopía de Anton Francesco Doni, El mundo prudente e insensato (1552)—, Ciudad del Sol constituye la obra utópica más importante de los inicios de la Edad Moderna, y al igual que Utopía se inspira en La República de Platón, pero no toma como referencia el humanismo de Erasmo, como hace Moro, sino el misticismo milenarista medieval. En este sentido, La Ciudad del Sol, es a la vez una obra teocrática y comunista.
