Torsten Blume

The Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany is known worldwide as an avant-garde Workshop school for architecture, art and design. Less well known is the fact that the school also had a tradition of dance, where a focus was placed on the question of form and space. Characterized with names like Form Dance, Glass Dance, Metall Dance, Stick Dance and Space Dance, the experimental dances were especially performed during Bauhaus festivals, while the Bauhaus band played a mix of Jazz and traditional German folk music.

Ludwig Grote hat wie kaum ein anderer Kunsthistoriker die Vorstellung vom Bauhaus als einer Idee geprägt, die weit über die historische Existenz der Schule hinausreicht. Mit Dokumenten aus seinem Nachlass im Kunstarchiv des Germanischen Nationalmuseums Nürnberg widmet sich das Buch erstmals umfassend Grotes Wirken als Bauhaus-Botschafter. Dabei wird seine problematische Einbindung in den nationalsozialistischen Kultur- und Kunstbetrieb, insbesondere seine Tätigkeit im Münchner Kunsthandel von 1939 bis 1945, ebenso verhandelt wie seine einflussreiche Position in der westdeutschen Kunstpolitik nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Im Zusammenklang aller Beiträge, zu denen auch erstmals eine ausführliche Biografie sowie ein Verzeichnis der von ihm veröffentlichten Texte und Bücher gehört, entsteht so ein bislang nicht vorliegendes komplexes Gesamtbild eines anregenden und widersprüchlichen Bauhaus-Kunsthistorikers.

Edition Bauhaus 38 In 1921, Walter Gropius founded a theater workshop at the Bauhaus. It conducted new research and experiments on the relationship between humans and technology. The central protagonists Lothar Schreyer, Oskar Schlemmer, and L�szl� Moholoy-Nagy investigated the issues of mechanization, machine industrialization, and rationalization. They sought a new, meaningful relationship with the dynamized, increasingly technically animated environment. In their stage laboratory, they developed abstract motion studies, designed atmosphere machines, and built theater apparatus. They also organized the famous Bauhaus celebrations, where they staged themselves as a collective of new humans. For the first time, an exhibition and a catalog with sketches, drawings, photographs as well as films, figurines, costumes, models, and apparatus are now devoted to the experiments and concepts of the legendary Bauhaus stage.
