Fuggiasco da Venezia, dopo Campoformio, Jacopo si isola sui Colli Euganei. Qui conosce Teresa e se ne innamora, ma sa che questo è un amore impossibile, perché Teresa è promessa a Odoardo. Jacopo si mette in viaggio per l'Italia, senza una meta e ovunque vede la tragedia dell'oppressione straniera, né lo consolano le bellezze naturali o la saggezza del vecchio Parini, incontrato a Milano.
