The Royal Free Drawing School (Ecole royale gratuite de dessin) fulfilled the Enlightenment ideal of an education open to all, rich and poor, male and female, and an education founded not on apprenticeship and the teachings of one master, but open to ideas of all sorts and the practical application of universal principles. The surviving documents, engravings, drawings, and objects that can be traced to the School, as well as the impressive number of artisans who trained there - craftsmen such as Claude Odiot, sculptors such as Sebastien Cave, architects such as Charles Percier, and painters such as Girodet - and the important figures in eighteenth-century cultural life - such as Voltaire, Lavoisier, the duc de Choiseul, and Madame du' Barry - who were involved with the School attest to its enormous importance in the development of the decorative arts in France during the Ancien Regime and in the century that followed.

Although his brief but productive career as a cabinetmaker in New York lasted a mere sixteen years, the French-born maitre ebeniste Charles-Honore Lannuier (1779-1819) was a leading figure in the development of a distinctive and highly refined style of furniture in the Late Federal period. A contemporary of the renowned master Duncan Phyfe, Lannuier, like him, made fashionable gilded card tables, marble-topped pier tables, bedsteads, and seating furniture for wealthy clients numbering among the mercantile and social elite of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Richmond, and Savannah. This monograph dedicated to the most spectacular example of Parisian First Empire interior architecture retraces the history of the building and the lives of its residents. The H�tel de Beauharnais, constructed in 1713, gained renown during the Consulate period. In 1803, Josephine Bonaparte acquired the property for her son, Eug�ne de Beauharnais, and had the building renovated and decorated at great expense. At the fall of the Napoleonic Empire, it was sold to the King of Prussia and became an embassy during the nineteenth century. With its unique Consulate and Empire decor, the palace is an invaluable specimen of Parisian interior architecture.
